The Blue Mountains: Top 5 Family Autumn Activities

Autumn is a magical time of year in the Blue Mountains. The leaves begin to change, the sun still keeps the days warm while the evening air has turned cool and crisp.

It’s the perfect time of year for a family getaway!

If you don’t have time to find activities to keep the little ones amused, never fear! We have pulled together our top five activities for families this Autumn.

1) Sculpture at Scenic World, Scenic World Blue Mountains
Sculpture at Scenic World is back for its eighth year!
Set among the stunning Blue Mountains, Sculpture at Scenic World is Australia’s premier regional art exhibition which transforms the ancient rainforest into an outdoor gallery from April 12 – May 12.

Showcasing over 25 artworks along the Scenic Walkway, an elevated boardwalk perfect for little ones to explore at their own pace, Sculpture at Scenic World provides a unique sensory experience with subtle artworks and interactive installations that appeal to families, couples and art lovers alike.

The kids will get a kick out the free Kids Trail Guide, while everyone will enjoy engaging guided tours and weekend workshops where they can nurture their inner artist with exciting creative activities designed for children, families and carers to explore art together.

Accommodation packages are also available with inclusions such as breakfast, free wi-fi, access to leisure facilities and more; there’s something to suit every family.

2) Fruit picking, Bilpin
Your family will feel a million miles away from the city while roaming the seemingly endless rows of fruit trees and picking apples, peaches, nectarines, pears and plums – just to name a few!

Some of our top picks (pun intended) are Bilpin Springs Orchard and Shields Orchard. We recommend calling ahead or checking the orchards’ websites for seasonal crops and opening hours.

While you’re in Bilpin be sure to visit hidden gem, Tutti Frutti. Relax in the rose garden courtyard, take in the fresh mountain air and enjoy a Devonshire tea or a famous home cooked apple pie.

Treat the little ones to some real fruit icecream, a beautiful blend of fresh picked berries, and rich vanilla icecream made on site.

3) Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah
The kids will be tuckered out after a day exploring Australia’s premier cool-climate botanic garden. Entry is free and you can easily spend hours wandering around this award winning attraction on a beautiful Autumn day.

While you’re there make sure you check out renowned restaurant The Potagerwhich won’t disappoint with picturesque views of the northern Blue Mountains and a seasonally driven menu which highlights the textures and flavours of outstanding local ingredients.

4) Leuralla Toy and Railway Museum
Show your kids what life was like before Pokémon Go and Fortnight!

Housing the largest collection of 20th century toys, trains and associated memorabilia in the Southern Hemisphere, the Toy and Railway Museum will entertain the young and young at heart.

Explore the historic mansion and model railway displays set among 12 acres of beautiful gardens, Leuralla is a great spot for big and small kids alike.
Open every day of the week from 10.00am – 5.00pm.

5) Family friendly bushwalking
With over 100 hectares of Blue Mountains National Park to explore you’ll be spoilt for choice trying to pick the perfect hike for your family. The Scenic World team’s top two choices for a family friendly bushwalk are:

The Charles Darwin Walk, Wentworth Falls
A completely flat walk connecting Wentworth Village with the Falls. It’s about 5kms return but easygoing and plenty of lovely places to stop along the way for snacks, or dip your feet in Jamison Creek.

Gordon Falls Reserve, Leura
There are several short walks here, some to lookouts and one down to the Pool of Siloam. The reserve also has the added bonus of nearby play equipment, BBQs and plenty of shady grass areas; a perfect end to a family walk.
