FAMILY-FOCUSED TRAVEL: EXPLORE HUNTINGTON BEACH

A coastal neighbour to Anaheim, Huntington Beach is world-renowned as Surf City USA. The laid-back beach town is also a top destination for family travel—kids, parents and grandparents included. The connection to nature and the outdoors allows all generations to create closer bonds and spend meaningful time interacting with one another. On your next Anaheim vacation, pack up the family for a quick day trip to explore the authentic experiences offered in this natural Orange County oasis.

Huntington Dog Beach

Don’t leave the most enthusiastic member of your family at home. Huntington Dog Beach, a stretch of 1.5 miles of coastline between Goldenwest and Seapoint streets, allows four-legged friends to run freely off-leash. It comes fully equipped with doggie waste bags and hosts special events throughout the year, including the annual Surf City Surf Dog competition in September and SoCal Corgi Nation Beach Days in the fall and spring.

Surf City Nights

A short stroll manageable for visitors of all ages, the weekly outdoor evening market shuts down the first five blocks of Main Street each Tuesday for pedestrian foot traffic. Surf City Nights are always a treat, with live music, street performers, farmers market vendors, kids’ activities like inflatable slides and dining choices aplenty from food trucks to outdoor cafes.

Bolsa Chica State Beach

There’s something for everyone along this stretch of coast. All ages will enjoy the Bolsa Chica Interpretive Center’s marine life and ecology exhibits, or birding and nature walks at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. For lunch in the area, let the little ones wiggle their toes in the sand at SeaLegs on the Beach while adults enjoy a glass of wine around a fire pit.

Central Park

Tucked behind the Huntington Beach Public Library and Cultral Center—which boasts one of the state’s largest collections of children’s books—the park is a hidden treasure ripe for exploring. Meander along shady paths surrounding lakes, an outdoor amphitheatre and play equipment before stopping for a snack at the charming Park Bench Cafe.

Bike Paths

A 10-mile paved beach path provides bikers with an ocean view while enjoying the coastal breezes. Rent a regular bike or an electric-powered Pedego from a concessionaire along Pacific Coast Highway to see sites like the famous Huntington Beach Pier.

All Inclusive Beach Playground

New this year, this accessible playground on Huntington City Beach is designed to promote interactive play among children of all abilities. The All Inclusive Beach Playground in the sand has a rubber surface with swings, a glider, monkey bars, slides and a spinner, as well as a small picnic area.

Pacific City

Huntington Beach’s oceanfront retail and entertainment plaza is home to preeminent food hall Lot 579. Inside, find some of O.C.’s favourite culinary concepts like Hans’ Homemade Ice Cream, Portola Coffee Roasters, Il Barone Sicilian Street food and more—an easy lunch spot for even your family’s pickiest of eaters.

Beachside Bonfire

No visit to Huntington Beach is complete without a cookout around one of the city’s 500-plus bonfire pits. Available on a first-come, first-serve basis, the fire rings are a perfect spot for families to enjoy an oceanfront picnic of hot dogs and s’mores.
