Northern Territory to promote tourist attractions in Darwin in August

A little bit of the Outback will be on show in Sydney this weekend when a veritable menagerie of Territory animals and their most famous whip cracker descend on Parramatta.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles said the Dyldam Parramatta Eels would host ‘Territory Day’ at Pirtek Stadium on Saturday as part of the team’s NT partnership.

“Baby freshwater crocs, water pythons and bearded dragons will be available for fans to touch, pat and pose for photos with as we promote our unique fauna, tourist attractions and the all-important Eels game against the Penrith Panthers in Darwin in August,” Mr Giles said.

“Whip cracker extraordinaire Mick Denigan will give the Western Sydney crowds a taste of the Territory in their backyard.

“Our ‘Do the NT’ tourism campaign will also be featured on the big screen during the premiership match against the Gold Coast Titans to encourage NRL fans to holiday in the Territory.”

The Territory Outback theme will continue during the half time break with a ‘croc egg’ collecting contest in the middle of the field.

“Fans will be chosen from the crowd and dressed as crocodiles to collect ‘croc egg’ footballs from a central ‘nest’. The fan with the most ‘eggs’ wins – although they will have to fight off the three other crocs to become King Croc,” Sport and Recreation Minister Gary Higgins said.

“Pirtek has a seating capacity of 20,500 and the match will be broadcast on Fox Sports so the advertising exposure for the Northern Territory from the whole day is hugely valuable.

“The agreement with the Eels continues to yield solid benefits for the Northern Territory through this sort of exposure as well as sport development in the NT, first class games and the team’s community engagement with locals.”

“Bringing the Territory to Parramatta is always a great experience, and our members and fans will enjoy meeting the animals and seeing the unique atmosphere of the NT,” Parramatta Eels CEO Scott Seward said.

“We can’t wait to get back up to the Territory for our home game at Darwin’s TIO Stadium in August, and bringing the Outback to Parramatta showcases our strong partnership.”

Saturday’s match is part of the NRL’s Round 6 fixtures. The Eels v Titans match begins at 2.30pm (ACST) on Fox Sports.
