GETTING TOWNSVILLE'S HISTORICAL ORGANISATIONS BACK ON THEIR FEET

In response the recent severe flooding, Queensland Museum Development Officers Jo Wills and Melanie Piddocke traveled to Townsville for a week to assist the Family History Association of North Queensland and the Townsville RSL, who were both inundated with water and sustained damage to their collections, assets and infrastructure.

Many significant objects, photos and textiles telling stories of Townsville's social and military history were either lost or damaged. Items that were able to be restored were prepared and stored in the large freezer at the Museum of Tropical Queensland where they will remain until conservation and display work can commence in the coming months.

The Queensland Museum Development Officers are happy to do phone interviews about the salvage operation. Further details of the recovery effort with photos of the damage sustained inside these buildings can be see here.
