Swapping exotic and extravagant honeymoon destinations for more affordable alternatives closer to home – more and more, newlyweds are opting to take a ‘minimoon’, according to leading accommodation provider Oaks Hotels & Resorts, who has observed a noticeable increase in couples choosing to stay for shorter-style sojourns soon after tying the knot.
As the name suggests, a ‘minimoon’ is a quick, post-wedding getaway spanning only a few days instead of the traditional two or three-week vacation – and due to the cost of modern-day weddings soaring, it’s no surprise that savvy newlyweds are deciding to downsize to this wallet-friendly solution, while saving for, or in lieu of, a long-haul honeymoon.
ASIC’s Moneysmart previously reported the average cost of Australian weddings to be $36,200, with more recent studies from Pacific Magazines, MyWedding.com, suggesting the average price surged to $65,482 in 2015, and then again to $90,128 in 2017. While exact data outlining the exact average cost of Australian weddings today remains indefinite, one thing is certain – contemporary weddings come at a hefty expense, leaving less in the piggy bank to spend on a lavish honeymoon experience.
As well as money, time is another factor that is fuelling the minimoon trend, with many newlyweds having pressing work or family commitments impact on their travel plans, or simply not having enough time (or annual leave!) directly after their nuptials to head overseas on an epic romantic adventure.
Mrs Kira Klein, Director of Marketing & Brand Loyalty at Minor Hotels, said Oaks Hotels & Resorts has noticed a growth in the number of newlywed couples booking minimoons at various property locations across Australia and in New Zealand.
“Moving into the peak-wedding season of the year, we have seen an increase in honeymooners choosing to stay with us for several days mid-week or over a weekend to unwind together following their busy wedding festivities,” she said.
“Our properties in desirable leisure destinations like Port Douglas, the Sunshine Coast, Queenstown, Melbourne and the Hunter Valley are proving particularly popular for the ‘minimoon’ movement due to their myriad romantic drawcards, from idyllic beaches to mouth-watering culinary offers and unique local attractions.
“Paired with our self-contained hotel and resort facilities, it’s an appealing combination for many couples who can enjoy a budget-friendly getaway in some of the world’s most picturesque and popular holiday hot spots.”
Minimoons can also act as a prelude to the real deal; the taster to a complete honeymoon experience that is often a lengthy plane ride away. Usually, within a few hours’ travel distance, these budget-friendly getaways will continue to gain popularity with newlyweds looking for an affordable but utterly memorable getaway.
