Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge – Experience the Thrill of “Walking in the Sky”

Hidden in Kyushu’s Miyazaki Prefecture, Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge is a symbol of Aya Town.

Spanning a length of 250 metres, the pedestrian bridge soars over one of the largest lucidophyllous forests in Japan.

“Teruha” means shining leaves and it aptly describes the luscious evergreen broad-leaved trees surrounding Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge.

Aya Town is blessed with nature filled with rich biodiversity. In 2013, it was designated an UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for its efforts at protecting nature and conserving biodiversity.

Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge offers nature lovers as well as adventure seekers a gateway to enjoy the beauty of the Aya Biosphere Reserve from thrilling heights.

The highest point of the bridge is 142 metres above the Ayaminami River. The metal grating design of the walkway tempts pedestrians to look at the deep gorge and river under their feet.

The feeling of floating over the rolling mountains may induce vertigo. For people who have fear of heights, they may be comforted knowing that the sturdy bridge is supported by two towers, 99 suspender cables, and a pair of wind cables placed below the deck.

Brave pedestrians who are not intimidated by high altitudes will be rewarded with panoramic views of the forest. As the season changes, the scenery enveloping Aya Teruha Suspension Bridge changes, too. In middle to late March, pale pink cherry blossoms decorate the slopes of the mountains while fresh green leaves brighten the landscape from April to May.

Other than being invigorated by the adrenaline of feeling suspended mid-air, pedestrians can feel the harmonious coexistence of people and nature as they cross the spectacular bridge. It’s definitely an unforgettable experience!
