Ordered in 1939, commissioned in 1943 and serving for nearly five decades, Battleship IOWA earned global recognition as one of the most advanced warships ever built.
Her impressive reputation came from an extraordinary combination of massive firepower, heavy armour, exceptional speed and a remarkable ability to adapt to evolving military technology.
The ship’s historical importance extends far beyond naval achievements. During World War Two, Battleship IOWA was specially equipped to transport United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt across the Atlantic Ocean to the historic Tehran Conference in 1943.
There, Roosevelt met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin to discuss wartime strategy and the future of the Allied campaign.
In preparation for the presidential voyage, a custom bathtub was installed aboard IOWA for Roosevelt’s comfort, making her the only United States Navy warship built with a bathtub specifically for a president.
Later in her distinguished career, the ship was recommissioned in 1984 by Vice President George H.W. Bush and proudly served during the Ronald Reagan era, including participation in America’s 1986 Celebration of Liberty in New York City.
