Last month, Mt Buller paid tribute to a remarkable milestone—75 continuous years of Ski Patrol service on the mountain. As the sun dipped behind the ranges, 100 patrollers past and present skied down the Bourke Street run under a darkening sky, each carrying a bright torch. The line of light that followed was more than a spectacle—it was a symbol of dedication, bravery, and community. Locals and visitors gathered in the village below, cheering as the glowing procession flowed down the mountain, culminating in a spectacular fireworks display that lit up the night.
Australia’s Longest-Serving Ski Patrol
Mt Buller’s Ski Patrol is the longest continuously operating service of its kind in the country. For 75 winters, these highly trained volunteers and professionals have been the mountain’s quiet guardians, ready to respond to emergencies, assist guests, and provide critical care in challenging alpine conditions. Their presence offers comfort and safety to thousands of skiers and snowboarders every season.A Family Tradition in Red Jackets
The anniversary event wasn’t just a celebration of service—it was a gathering of generations. Patrol manager Ed Mahon reflected on the legacy: “We have parents and children, and grandparents participating this evening who have all donned the Patrol jacket and served Mt Buller.” The evening’s torchlight descent became a moving tribute to the families who have passed down a commitment to mountain safety from one generation to the next.Duty Never Sleeps
As the celebration unfolded, a few patrollers quietly stepped out of the torchlight procession. A radio call had come in—someone on the slopes needed help. Without hesitation, those team members left the festivities and returned to what they do best: caring for others. It was a powerful reminder that their work is not ceremonial, but essential—and it doesn’t stop for anniversaries.Lifesavers of the Snow Exhibit
To commemorate this historic occasion, the National Alpine Museum of Australia is hosting a season-long exhibition titled Lifesavers of the Snow. Featuring archival photographs, vintage equipment, and stories from decades of service, the exhibit offers a deeper look into the evolution of ski patrolling at Mt Buller and beyond. It’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand the human heart behind the mountain's safety net.Mt Buller Alpine Resort
