Curtain Up for Sydney Opera House Concert Hall Renewal

refurbished Concert Hall
Concert Hall Renovation Revealed!

For more than two and a half years, hundreds of construction workers, acousticians, architecture and heritage experts, have been busy delivering the biggest upgrade to the Sydney Opera House's Concert Hall since it opened nearly 50 years ago, and now we are thrilled to welcome artists and audiences back to experience world-class performances in the newly refurbished Concert Hall.

The project has improved acoustics for artists and audiences in both orchestral and amplified mode, enhanced access for people with mobility needs, and provided a more flexible and safer working environment for staff behind the scenes.

Sydney Symphony Orchestra Returns to Sydney Opera House

To celebrate a season of new beginnings, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra turn to Mahler's mighty Second Symphony with new Chief Conductor, Simone Young. Popularly known as the Resurrection Symphony, it's one of Mahler's best known and most celebrated, and the perfect work to mark the Sydney Symphony's return to the Sydney Opera House.

An exciting new work from First Nations composer William Barton, including the sound of clapsticks made from wood salvaged from the concert hall stage, also marks the spirit of the occasion and the site of the celebration.

Completion of Decade of Renewal

Funded by the NSW Government, the once-in-a-generation upgrade of the Concert Hall is the largest and final project in the Decade of Renewal - a 10-year program of capital works totaling almost $300 million to upgrade the Sydney Opera House ahead of our 50th anniversary in 2023.
