Break out the bubbly in Alberta

Magnificent icefalls and the breathtaking beauty of ice bubbles are like the icing on the cake of Canada’s natural winter wonderland phenomena.

Icefalls occur when glaciers flow rapidly over a steep drop, like a waterfall frozen in time. Ice bubbles, on the other hand, are created from water-dwelling bacteria expelling methane gas. Prepare to be dazzled by the magical icefalls and ice bubbles of Abraham Lake, Alberta. While many lakes have ice bubbles, Abraham Lake benefits from tremendous winds that regularly clear the ice and make it easier to see under the surface. Read on for how to see them.

Abraham Lake is located in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, just two hours from Banff, just outside the Banff National Park boundary. Join a Rockies Heli Bubbles Tour for a photo safari like no other! This special day out includes a helicopter flight, snowshoeing, a guided bubble tour on Abraham Lake, with hot chocolate, a hot lunch and winter gear provided. Available mid-December to mid-March.
