A bumper season for mozzies - La Niña set to bring mosquitoes out for blood this summer

Turns out 2020 wasn’t a bad year for everyone, as mozzies prepare to celebrate summer in the masses thanks to La Niña officially being declared by the Bureau of Meterology¹.

With wetter than average weather patterns creating the ideal breeding grounds for mozzies, Australians will need to brace themselves for the onslaught of mosquitoes this spring and summer is set to bring.

And while many of us were looking forward to some much needed sunshine, time outdoors and domestic holidays with family and friends, Bushman CEO Andrew Raper warns, the mozzies are out for blood.

“There’s nothing worse than having a barbecue with family or a hike with friends ruined by mosquitoes, whether it’s a sole mozzie that is found after the damage has already been done or if you’ve been attacked by an entire swarm,” Andrew says.

“Mosquitoes don't live very long — no more than about three weeks - but unfortunately we can expect to see several ‘surges’ over summer thanks to La Niña.”

Even those that believe they’re not getting bitten can actually still be victims, just less prone to experiencing a reaction to the mosquito's bite(inflammation, redness and itching).

Still, mozzies are much more than a nuisance.

They’re a vector for a wide variety of diseases and viruses, with Ross River being the most commonly found virus in Australia.

Mosquito-borne viruses can go undetected for months before more serious symptoms are felt including fever, muscle tenderness, rashes or chronic fatigue and it only takes one mosquito bite to pass on the pathogens that can make you sick.

To ensure a summer that’s free from mosquito bites and the diseases they carry, the most effective way to protect yourself and your family is to apply repellent as directed.

Thankfully, Bushman has the solution to outsmart the outdoors this summer.

Its latest innovation, Bushman Naturals, has launched just in time for the bumper season of mosquitoes to offer long lasting protection through harnessing the power of a natural active.

The revolutionary new product is the most effective natural insect repellent on the market, and is the first natural formulation from any major brand.

“There has been a dramatic shift in the desire for natural products, which is why we started working on a natural repellant over eight years ago. ¹

ABC News 2020: BOM declares La Niña wet conditions likely for Eastern Australia “The result is a safe, natural repellent that meets Bushman’s rigorous standards of efficacy, so Aussies and their families can enjoy the outdoors without the worry of mosquito bites and the diseases they carry this summer.”

Bushman Naturals has up to 9-hour scientifically proven protection time (the highest natural protection available), time release technology, is sweat and water resistant and has a pleasant neutral scent and comfortable skin feel.

Making it the perfect repellent for all outdoor occasions - from the bush to the backyard.

Bushman Naturals is an aerosol-free, fine mist spray in aluminium packaging for optimal recyclability.

It’s suitable for the whole family aged 12 months+ and is available in all good pharmacies, supermarkets and outdoor stores.

Naturals is effective against mosquitoes, sandflies, black flies, stable flies and midges. RRP: $15.85 - 145ml NET.
