Nick Murphy has today released a new EP titled Missing Link ahead of his exclusive Vivid LIVE shows on June 1-3, 2017, as part of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.
Missing Link is Murphy’s first release following his announcement last year that he’ll record and perform under his given name and step away from his Chet Faker moniker. Opening with the first single Your Time, a moody recording featuring production from KAYTRANADA, the EP continues to move through Murphy’s sound evolution from the voiceless distortion of 'Bye to Weak Education', the dance-influenced track closer.
The trailer for Missing Link, co-directed by Murphy and New York-based Australian filmmaker and musician Johann Rashid, was released last week and features some of the EP’s visual accompaniment.
The Australian musician and producer now writes, produces, records and performs under his given name, Nick Murphy. His achievements as Chet Faker are great and varied: appearing in the top 10 of triple j’s Hottest 100 for three consecutive years (including taking out the #1 position for his double-platinum hit Talk is Cheap). His critically-acclaimed debut album Built On Glass was also an international success.
In a rare interview with co-producer Dave Harrington of DARKSIDE, Nick Murphy discusses his sonic evolution from Chet Faker and his plans for crafting a 360-degree experience exclusively for the Opera House.
“These headline shows are a one-off opportunity that gives me the chance to put together something new specifically designed for the space and time,” said Murphy. “I've been experimenting on stage with new material and ideas so it seems like a perfect moment in-between. It might be the missing link.”
His two legendary Sydney Opera House Forecourt performances in 2015 sold out in a day, with over 12,000 people filling Sydney’s harbourside. The event was streamed live around the world and captured in film.
Missing Link marks the creative rebirth of Chet Faker as Nick Murphy, and will transform the Concert Hall into an immense canvas for a special, site specific one-off event at the Sydney Opera House, as part of Vivid Sydney.
