Labyrinths have been described as ‘paths of prayer’, ‘walking meditations’ or ‘watering holes for the spirit’, as they are simple contemplative pathways with only one route and no dead ends. Research from Australia and overseas shows labyrinths have a positive effect on mental health and wellbeing.
Delivered under the Centennial Park Master Plan 2040, the Centennial Park Labyrinth is located adjacent to Willow Pond. It is 18 metres in diameter, made of sandstone, and composed of 11 circuits, based on the design of the medieval labyrinth in Chartres Cathedral in France, which dates back to the early 13th Century.
Musical composer Corrina Bonshek has created a stunning arrangement specifically for the Centennial Park Labyrinth, and has made it freely available for users to download and listen as they traverse the labyrinth.
