BLUE MOUNTAINS GRAND CANYON GLOWS BY NIGHT

The community of outdoor adventure guides who work in the Blue Mountains has come together to create Adventure Aid - a weekend of adventures in the area to raise money and awareness for the environmental recovery effort.

Adventure Aid aims to support the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and Blue Mountains City Council to make the area safe and environmentally responsible for visitors to enjoy the canyons, cliffs, campsites and tracks once again.

Adventure Aid is a series of adventures on the weekend of 29 February to 1 March 2020 with proceeds going to this important cause.

The weekend includes a special opportunity known as The Grandest Canyon – Glow Worms by Night.

The unique canyon adventure will take place on Saturday 29 February and includes abseiling into the Grand Canyon that features ferny glades and towering rock walls, before exploring the dark depths of the chamber as it glistens with glow worms, akin to a starry night.

Kangaroo Island Koalas and Kangaroos Spotted Roaming London

SeaLink Travel Group is using its new global footprint to launch a campaign to encourage international tourists back to Kangaroo Island and to Australia, unveiling SeaLink owned buses carrying our unique and friendly wildlife.

Rolling out across London, the slogan carries a clear message, 'Kangaroo Island – we're open for business' and uses Kangaroo Island's unique wildlife as a personal invite to come down under and meet all the friendly locals.

SeaLink Travel Group CEO, Clint Feuerherdt said “We are using our global footprint to show the world that most of Australia was not affected by the recent bushfires. It is still the most diverse, beautiful and friendly place to visit with so much to see and do.”

“Most of Australia was not impacted by the recent bushfires at all and the parts that were, like Kangaroo Island, the regeneration is already happening right before our eyes. It's a spectacle in itself with all the vibrant colours literally rising from the ashes is something you simply don't want to miss,” he said.

The eye-catching advertising roaming the London streets is a personal invite from Kangaroo Island's koalas and kangaroos to not put off your travel plans, come down and meet the locals. There was so much of Kangaroo Island's pristine nature and habitat that was not impacted by the fires. You will still have the time of your life.

London's iconic double-decker buses will carry images of kangaroos and koalas through the main streets of the city for the next month, which is estimated to be seen by millions of Londoners and other international tourists.

“It is more important now than ever before that we are promoting our beautiful country, encouraging people to visit as it is safe to travel to Australia. You are guaranteed to have a brilliant experience that will leave you with amazing lifelong memories,” he said.

SeaLink Travel Group is using its international footprint to push the message wide and far.

On 16 January 2020, SeaLink finalised the purchase of the Transit Systems Group, including Tower Transit. This saw SeaLink grow from 1600 employees to over 8500 making the Group one of the largest transport and tourism providers in Australia. Transit Systems operates contracts for public bus transport in most states across Australia, with operations in London and Singapore through Tower Transit. The expanded SeaLink Travel Group now has nearly 3400 buses and 78 ferries.

“SeaLink can now take you to work and take you on holidays,” Mr Feuerherdt said. “We want to provide the best travel solution for our customers and clients that is both safe and sustainable.”

The SeaLink Travel Group connects domestic and international tourists to many of Australia's unique and brilliant islands.

“SeaLink is synonymous with Kangaroo Island in South Australia, but we also connect tourists to Fraser Island, Magnetic Island and North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, Rottnest Island in Western Australia, the Tiwi Islands in the Northern Territory, Bruny Island in Tasmania and more.”

“We also offer amazing cruise experiences on Sydney Harbour, the mighty Murray River and the Swan River in Perth through our Captain Cook Cruises brand.”

“We are not just encouraging international tourists back to Australia, but also domestic tourists to holiday here this year. There is so much to see and do in our own backyard, so I want to invite all Australians to get out there and support your local communities and tour operators.”

For some brilliant travel ideas right across Australia, SeaLink Travel Group developed a website promoting the iconic destinations and unique experiences their tourism family connects people to.

TOURISM MALAYSIA JOINS FORCES WITH QATAR AIRWAYS TO WOO QATARI MARKET

Organised in partnership with Qatar Airways, Tourism Malaysia led a delegation to Qatar, with the aim to further strengthen Malaysia’s appeal as a preferred travel destination in the Gulf nation in a roadshow leading to Saudi’s premier travel and trade event, the Jeddah International Tourism and Travel Exhibition (JTTX) 2020 from 26 to 28 February.

Led by Mr. Shahrin Bin Mokhtar, Director of Tourism Malaysia in the Dubai office; the delegation comprised of 5 organisations from hotels and travel agents, tourism product owners, as well as representatives from Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), Penang Global Tourism and the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC). The group met with local industry representatives with the goal of promoting Malaysia’s tourism offerings and highlighting the latest attractions ahead of the upcoming holiday seasons.

The roadshow began with a B2B event, which was held in Westin Doha on 23 February 2020. The exchange session kicked off with a tabletop discussion and received great response from relevant trade and travel representatives. The event was also graced with the official visit by Mr. Mohamad Shahir Bin Sabarudin, the Malaysian embassy official in Doha, with the hope to further develop the goodwill between Malaysia and Qatar. Attendees then enjoyed presentations by Qatar Airways, MHTC and Penang Global Tourism, who showcased the diverse range of exciting experiences available to travellers in the country, before breaking for lunch and networking opportunities.

“The Gulf Cooperation Council or the GCC represents a land of opportunity for the Malaysian tourism industry, and we are delighted to visit Qatar to showcase our impressive line-up of tourism offerings to the local travel trade,” said the Malaysian embassy official when commenting on the importance of the Qatari market.

“As a Muslim-majority country, our shared cultural ties make Malaysia one of Southeast Asia’s most visitor-friendly destinations for travellers from the Middle East. We are confident that this roadshow will further strengthen business ties and inspire more people here to discover our wonderful country,” he commented further.

The Middle East is seen as a key market for Malaysia, which was named the number one destination for Muslim travellers for nine consecutive years (2011–2019) by Singapore-based CrescentRating, the world's leading authority on Halal Travel. Total tourist arrivals from West Asia stood at 309,224 in 2019 where the Qatari market recorded a number of 4,089 tourists.

The Doha roadshow offered the Malaysian delegation an opportunity to highlight the country’s visitor attractions, including Langkawi, a beautiful island renowned for its breathtaking beaches and lush greenery. Some of the island’s wonders include its soaring peaks with sweeping vistas, as well as its iconic cable car that traverses old rocks of over 550 million years.

In terms of accessibility, Qatar Airways currently operates 21 flights from Kuala Lumpur to Doha, four flights from Penang to Doha and five flights from Langkawi to Doha per week. Together, the flights have the capacity to cater to more than 9,000 passengers weekly.

This roadshow in Doha is designed to support the objectives of the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign, which aims to attract more than 30 million tourists and approximately KD 7.4 billion (RM100 billion) in tourism receipts.

The Emperor's Birthday in Japan

The Emperor’s Birthday is a holiday in Japan, as the name suggests, to celebrate the day of birth of the current Emperor.

Until 2019, the Emperor’s Birthday was celebrated on 23rd December, but due to the beginning of the era of Reiwa in line with the ascension of Emperor Naruhito, the date has been changed to 23rd February.

Since 23rd February 2020 is a Sunday which is already considered as a holiday, Monday, 24th February also became a holiday this year, which led to a 3-day weekend.

Be cautious when planning trips to Japan during this period, as various sightseeing spots throughout the country will likely be quite crowded.

Peam Lvea Dam rehabilitation makes way for eco-tourism

The Peam Lvea Dam is located in Peam Lvea village,
Trapeang Chou commune, Oral district,
in Kampong Speu province. Hong Menea
A dam that was built in Kampong Speu province’s Oral district, about 130km from the capital, during the Khmer Rouge regime was recently restored and has now become a local eco-friendly tourist attraction.

On the surface, the Peam Lvea Dam makes it possible to manage irrigation of rice fields in the community and store enough water to sustain rainy and dry seasons.

However, the dam also has a dual role. It offers boats a channel for navigation as they ferry tourists to the scenic Oral Mountains.

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology’s website reveals that the dam’s restoration concluded in 2017, with a 3km road and four irrigation bridges.

“Upon completion, the dam’s irrigation system can now supply water for more than 1,000ha during the rainy season and more than 100ha during the dry season. It also plays an important role in mitigating flooding from the Stung Prek Thnot stream,” it said.

Tourists can combine their visit to the dam with seeing other eco-spots including the Oral Mountain Range where verdant forests, rapid rivers and vast rice fields serve as refreshing sights for the eyes.

Vat Ven, a fisherman who lives near the dam, takes time to use his fishing boat to row tourists along the channel. “People rent my boat to see the sights along the channel, so I take them. They take photos of the scenic views and dozens of selfies. Sometimes, they spend hours fishing by the bank,” says Ven.

At the lower part of the dam sits the artificial Peam Lvea Dam Waterfall, merely 10m wide and 5m high.

Ten huts line up below the falls to provide a space of relaxation and serve refreshments to passing tourists.

“We serve food made from the villagers’ local produce. Normally, a medium-sized plate of food costs from 20,000 riel up while the large plate starts from 40,000 riel. Prices of fish dishes vary according to size while roasted chicken – the most popular choice – starts from 50,000 riel,” says business owner An Narin.

“Usually, we open from 9am and stop receiving orders at 6pm. But people can stay until 9pm. Most people play in the water.

“Although this place was built by Khmer Rouge victims, tourists who wish to take a dip come nighttime have nothing to fear as we provide rechargeable underwater lights,” says Narin.

Mao Saron, a tourist travelling from Phnom Penh with friends, says: “When we have free time, my friends and I try to seek new places, which is how we got here. In this place, we can row along the channel and take photos from the road to the dam. More importantly, it gives us a space to gather.”

Tourists coming from the capital can use National Road No 5, turn left on Road 136 near Udong market to Amleang, and then take a right turn by a forked road.

AIME Bucks Industry Challenges and Delivers Successful Event

Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME), held last week in Melbourne (February 17–19), has successfully delivered an invigorating industry event, with over 2,500 visitors and 300 exhibitors descending on the showroom floor.

With over 10,000 meetings taking place over two days, quality buyers and exhibitors connected to conduct business for the years ahead. Furthermore, overall registrations saw a 20 per cent uplift despite current reduced levels of international travel due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak.

“The beginning of 2020 has seen our industry faced with many challenges, both locally and abroad, however the community spirit imbued AIME 2020 and has never been stronger.”

“The feedback from both buyers and exhibitors so far has been incredibly positive and we’re proud to have delivered what we set out to do. Looking forward to 2021, we will continue to improve and elevate the AIME experience yet again,” said Matt Pearce, CEO, Talk2 Media & Events.

Kicking off the three-day event, the Knowledge Exchange connected delegates from all over the world for a day of education and community building and were welcomed by the Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, The Honourable Martin Pakula.

Speakers across the day included Holly Ransom, CEO of Emergent, unpacking leadership skills for survival in a hyperconnected world, and Christopher Kai, CEO of The Mathem Group, exploring the power of human connections in business events. This was followed by two days of business on the show floor, focusing on commercial outcomes.

Commenting on the show, CEO of Business Events Perth, Gareth Martin said, “AIME is one of our key events of the year and it’s great to meet with national and international buyers to showcase Perth. We’ve been the Perth Convention Bureau for the last 48 years and have recently changed our name to Business Events Perth. AIME provided the perfect platform to explain how this renaming is part of the bigger story of change for Perth over the past five years and how Western Australia is, more than ever, a leading business event destination.”

With plenty of discussion already surrounding AIME 2021, buyers and exhibitors have already booked in for the event 12 months in advance. AIME will run next year in Melbourne 22–24 February 2021.

LAOS RANKED 3RD IN WANDERLUST TRAVEL AWARDS 2020

Photo: The Laotian Times
Laos has taken third place in the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2020 by British travel magazine Wanderlust that covers adventure, cultural and special interest travel.

Each year in October and November the magazine asks its readers to rate their travels of the past year. The awards reach an audience of around half a million responsive and curious travelers and have been established for over 15 years, according to the magazine.

Laos scored 96.25 percent of satisfaction rates, winning the bronze medal in the awards.

“Lovely Laos rounds out the top three. Probably because it sums up laid-back South-East Asia just right,” the magazine said.

“Laos is smiley, scenic, good value and offers delicious cuisine, with a pleasing amount of characterful hotels and modern comforts. Not so much that it’s lost its charm and soul, though. Long may that last,” it added.

Namibia topped the awards with 96.47 percent of satisfaction rates, followed by Peru with 96.33 percent.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japan came 5th with 95.63 percent, Vietnam in 9th with 94.49 percent and India in 10th with 93.33 percent.

In December last year, Laos’s Luang Prabang ranked 11th in a list of top 20 places to travel in 2020, published by Architectural Digest. In the same month, Laos’s Kuang Si Falls in Lung Prabang ranked 26th in the list of 50 most popular destinations for Japanese tourists in 2019 compiled by TripAdvisor Japan, marking the first time for a tourist site in Laos to make the list.

Separately, in October last year, Booking.com Japan named Vientiane as the best city for walking tours in Southeast Asia where tourists could explore the city on foot day and night.
