Prestigious Global Photojournalism Exhibition Comes To Ballarat For The First Time

Victoria will welcome one of the world’s most respected photography exhibitions this August as the internationally acclaimed World Press Photo Exhibition returns to the state for the first time in a decade.

Hosted by the Art Gallery of Ballarat, the globally renowned showcase will be presented at the historic Ballarat Mining Exchange from 8 August to 20 September 2026.

Marking the first time Ballarat has hosted the exhibition, the event offers visitors a rare opportunity to experience some of the most powerful photojournalism and documentary photography from around the world.

The exhibition forms part of the celebrated annual World Press Photo Contest, which honours outstanding visual storytelling from professional photographers capturing defining moments across continents, cultures and communities.

Award Winning Images Reflect The State Of The Modern World

The 2026 World Press Photo contest attracted an extraordinary 57,376 photographic entries submitted by 3,747 photographers representing 141 countries.

From this immense international field, the winning images selected for the Ballarat exhibition reveal both global headlines and lesser-known human stories often overlooked by mainstream coverage.

Visitors can expect compelling visual narratives exploring conflict, crisis, resilience, resistance, culture and enduring traditions.

The exhibition also shines a spotlight on major contemporary issues affecting communities worldwide, including the far-reaching impact of climate change across destinations as diverse as Los Angeles, the Philippines, Mexico and Norway.

Social movements and civic action feature strongly throughout the collection, with powerful imagery documenting protests in the United States, women’s movements in Guatemala and youth activism in Madagascar.

Australian audiences will also encounter local relevance within the exhibition through the inclusion of photography documenting the devastating Bondi massacre.

A Global Cultural Event With A Strong Victorian Presence

Following its world premiere in Amsterdam, the World Press Photo Exhibition travels to more than sixty locations internationally, drawing audiences eager to engage with meaningful visual storytelling and contemporary global issues.

While the exhibition has appeared in cities including Sydney and Brisbane in recent years, Victorian audiences have not had the opportunity to experience the showcase locally for many years.

Its arrival in Ballarat represents a significant cultural milestone for regional Victoria and highlights the city’s growing importance as a destination for arts, culture and major exhibitions.

Due to temporary closure of the Art Gallery of Ballarat for essential building works, the exhibition will be staged at the Ballarat Mining Exchange, providing an alternative venue rich in heritage character and historical significance.

Photography That Challenges, Inspires And Connects

Art Gallery of Ballarat Director Louise Tegart said she was delighted to bring the exhibition to Ballarat for the first time.

“World Press Photo reflects the state of the world at this time. While some of the images are difficult to view, they hold up a mirror to society and alongside the images of heartbreak there are images of hope.”

She praised the extraordinary work of photojournalists and documentary photographers, including Australian image makers, whose commitment preserves critical moments in history through visual storytelling.

World Press Photo Executive Director Joumana El Zein Khoury also highlighted the importance of trust, care and thoughtful judging in selecting the awarded stories.

The exhibition continues to be recognised globally for presenting powerful journalism through imagery that informs, challenges perceptions and sparks meaningful conversations.
