Generational spend trends on travel: will 2022 be see the rise Gen X gap year?

Travel in and out of our country, as well as to and from the various states and territories within it is the topic on everyone’s lips. But while the ‘where’ people want to go remains on standby, we now know exactly which groups of Aussies will spending their money on it when the time comes.

Diversified full-service payments and Buy Now, Pay Later company, humm, has shared new data into the travel attitudes and preferences by the different generations of Australians, revealing very differing priorities.

The key findings of the survey:
  • ‘Travel’ is the most popular thing people want to spend on post lockdown across all age groups from 18 – 75+.
  • ‘Travel is the: 1# priority for 40-54 year olds, as well as 60-69 year olds       2# priority for 25-39 year olds and 55+ year olds, who are otherwise keen to spend on shopping, then experiences with family
  • Interestingly, 18–44 year-olds are keen to book domestic holidays
  • Whereas the 45–49 year-olds are aiming to head overseas
  • Travel is the top priority for consumers from NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, TAS and WA
  • 55% of customers are planning to book travel as soon as they can
  • WA consumers are heading overseas more than the other states
  • The main reason people want to travel is to catch up with friends or family, followed by seeing something completely new and visiting an old favourite place
