MYANMAR ORGANISED FIRST NATIONAL TOURISM CONFERENCE

In a great effort to revitalize the tourism industry, Myanmar successfully convened 1st Myanmar Tourism Conference 2018 (MTC 2018). The event was organized by Union of Myanmar Travel Association under guidance of Ministry of Hotels & Tourism and supported by Myanmar Tourism Federation.

The event marked a historic event in Myanmar tourism industry as as the first national level tourism conference.

“MTC 2018 is a good start. It took us one and half years to organize the MTC amid serious challenges.” said Dr. Lu Mon, vice chairman of Union of Myanmar Travel Association and joint secretary general of Myanmar Tourism Federation. “We had to convince a lot of stakeholders that there is now a great need to start organizing those kind of events in order to sustain a good future for the industry.”, he continued.

U Henry Van Thio, Myanmar’s vice president, who is also the chairman of national tourism development committee, delivered an opening remarks at the MTC. Former president of Myanmar, U Htin Kyaw and former first lady also attended the conference. Union, state and region ministers, members of parliament, government officials and INGOs were among over 400 people joining the conference.

Six tourism papers of recommendation were presented at the event which included destination management, marketing strategy, HRD/TVET, SME development, taxation, and Investment opportunities in tourism, followed by respective workshops in the afternoon session. Creation of tourism papers were supported by tourism related INGOs in the country.

At the end of the day, The Ministry of Hotel & Tourism announced a draft version of tourism development accord with intention to furnish detailed work plan into the declaration.

“We look forward to the implementation of the declaration’s action plan to come soon and hope that we continue to organize such conference every one or two years”, commented positively by Dr. Lu Mon.
