NSW Deputy Premier and Member for Monaro, John Barilaro today welcomed Mr Froome and other competitors to the region, alongside the NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres.
“L’Etape Australia is a new world-class road cycling event, secured for the region by the NSW Government for the next three years, in a massive win for the Snowy Mountains,” Mr Barilaro said.
“With more than 3,500 cyclists competing tomorrow and tens of thousands of spectators, the event will provide a fantastic boost to the local visitor economy with more than $4 million in visitor expenditure.
“We welcome visitors to our region for the race and invite you to enjoy the unique surroundings, our local attractions and fantastic hospitality.”
NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, Stuart Ayres said the event will showcase the very best of the region.
“The Snowy Mountains is one of Australia’s best cycling destinations, and the L’Etape Australia course will take riders through some of most breathtaking scenery our country has to offer. From mountain climbs to rolling hills and deep valleys, the course is both challenging and spectacular,” Mr Ayres said.
“It’s also great to have Chris Froome taking part in the race, who is already an all-time legend of cycling, and will provide a real thrill for participating cyclists taking on this incredible course.
“Events like L’Etape Australia provide a welcome boost to the regional economy and I wish all competitors the best of luck and congratulate the organisers on their hard work creating this amazing event.”
The L’Etape Australia course is endorsed by the Le Tour de France Race Director Christian Prudhomme, and mirrors Tour de France racing conditions. The highlight will be the finishing climb up the Col de Kosciuszko, which will provide riders a gruelling test before they cross the finish line in Perisher.
