Domestic visitor data released overnight shows visitors to the Gold Coast have spent $3 billion in the year ending September, 2016.
The National Visitor Survey (NVS) conducted by Tourism Research Australia reported a 6.5% increase in domestic visitor expenditure recorded for the same period last year. The total number of domestic visitors also rose – by 3.8% to 3.66 million - while the number of nights fell 1.5% to 13.3 million.
Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter said the figures were encouraging and reflected the steady growth witnessed in the past year however the industry was cautious in the wake of the Dreamworld tragedy.
“We are yet to see any data regarding the impact the tragedy may have had on the Gold Coast Tourism industry and our community,” he said.
While international visitor expenditure continues to break records on the Gold Coast, domestic daytrip figures show an 11% growth in visitors to 8.5 million and the daytrip expenditure rose 18% to $818.3 million.
“On average, the Gold Coast is growing faster than Queensland overall and we are working hard to continue to drive visitation to Australia's most popular holiday destination.”
Brisbane remains the key source market domestically with 1.2m visitors in the same period – an increase of 2.6% and visitation from Sydney grew 9.2%. The smaller source markets of regional NSW and regional Victoria grew (19.8 % and 58.3% respectively) however the number of visitors from Melbourne declined by 3.9%.
