A Sweet Journey from Barcelona to Vietnam
The legacy of Savall Chocolates dates back to 1892 in Barcelona, where the brand’s iconic Pastelería Reñé became a symbol of refined sweetness in the city. The family’s expertise in the art of chocolate-making has been passed down through generations, with Chef Victor Ceano Savall, the 30-year-old creative genius behind Savall’s latest venture, continuing to craft luxurious chocolates using both traditional techniques and innovative flavours.
Victor moved to Vietnam in 2014, working at various local restaurants and hotels before founding Savall in Danang in 2016. The move to open Chocolate Corner by Savall at Wafaifo Resort Hoi An marks an exciting chapter in the chocolatier's expansion and celebrates a true passion project combining his family's legacy with the unique ingredients and culture of Vietnam.
A Celebration of Local Culture and Ingredients
The delights at Chocolate Corner by Savall are not only a treat for the taste buds but also a visual feast. The chocolates, bonbons, and catanias (roasted and caramelised nuts covered in white chocolate and a thin layer of cocoa powder) are inspired by Vietnam’s cultural landmarks and symbols. Shaped like the iconic Japanese Bridge, the Dragon Bridge, the lanterns of Hoi An, and even the walls of the Hue Citadel, these artistic creations pay homage to the country’s rich history and vibrant traditions.
The design of some chocolates draws inspiration from Vietnam’s bamboo forests, further connecting the treats to the local environment. What sets Savall chocolates apart is the commitment to using 100% Vietnamese ingredients, free from artificial preservatives, dyes, or flavourings. This dedication to quality ensures an authentic taste experience that celebrates both local culture and the craftsmanship of the chocolatier.
Pieter van der Hoeven, General Manager of Wafaifo Resort, shared his excitement about this unique collaboration: “Chocolate Corner by Savall is a fine example of a literal melting pot where culinary heritage, skills, and local ingredients mix together to create delightful results. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship, both local and international, in the heart of Hoi An.”
Crafting Luxury with Local Flavours
The chocolates at Chocolate Corner by Savall are designed to convey the cultural beauty of Vietnam to visitors. Chef Victor Savall draws on the teachings of his grandfather, Joaquim Savall Reñé, whose recipes have shaped his journey as a chocolatier. As he explains, “The recipes my grandfather taught me can be tasted for themselves at Chocolate Corner by Savall. Using the best Vietnamese ingredients, we have created luxurious artisan sensations that look and taste beautiful.”
Visitors to Chocolate Corner can sample these handcrafted delights before purchasing, allowing them to fully appreciate the delicate flavours and intricate designs. After selecting their favourites, guests can enjoy their chocolates in a relaxed setting at the Bang Huu coffee shop within the resort, where they can pair their treats with a refreshing selection of teas, coffees, and juices.
