Italian restaurant Tesoro launches in Hobart's new Mövenpick Hotel

Located in the new Mövenpick Hotel on one of Hobart's principal heritage streetscapes, Tesoro, meaning treasure, is a showcase of humble, flavourful Italian fare.

Inspired by the epicurean treasures of Tasmania, Executive Chef Trent Whelan (Mr Carpano, Mr Good Guy + Bar) combines the best produce from local growers, farmers and makers, with traditional techniques to create a menu of modern Italian classics.

Here, plates of grilled asparagus with black garlic, parmesan, truffle oil and poached egg appear alongside Cape Grim steaks – dryaged in-house – and homemade pasta dishes adorned with beef brisket, pomodoro, pecorino and vino.

Risottos of locally foraged mushrooms and Tasmanian truffle oil are enjoyed beside pizzas topped with local, seasonal ingredients, before diners descend on a selection of mouth-watering dolci including Pannacotta with Prosecco and wild berries, Crèma Catalana with lemon custard and Tesoro's take on the classic Italian Tiramisu.

For those overwhelmed by choice, Whelan has designed the Chef's Road Trip. Featuring the chef's selection of best-selling dishes and seasonal specials, diners will be taken from Tasmania to Italy sampling legendary local produce fashioned into traditional Italian fare.

Executive Chef Trent Whelan said “For the team at Tesoro, it's important we showcase the exceptional produce for which Tasmania is known. Italian cuisine, and the humble, authentic manner that hero's ingredients is the perfect vehicle to highlight these epicurean treasures.

Simple food and ingredients sourced through local, sustainable and ethical producers – many of whom we know personally – from the foundation of our food ethos. And, much like the Italians, we want to show appreciation for the hard work of farmers by creating memorable dining experiences” he said.

Designed by global design agency Greymatters, the space, comprising restaurant, bar and private dining room is equally appealing. In the main restaurant, Murals by Australia artist Steve Cross' playful represent renaissance art and create a focal point against a neutral colour palette.

Terrazzo flooring provides a foundation for strong bronze accents, forest green tufted banquettes, dark wood grain tables and a selection of plush chairs and stools which provide guests a variety of seating options.

In honouring local makers, shelves and nooks display a collection of Tasmanian artwork and artefacts whilst at the bar, counter seating allows guests the offer a sense of intimacy and the opportunity to interact with chefs and bar-staff.

Just a short stroll from both the Salamanca precinct and Hobart CBD, Tesoro's showcase of humble Italian cooking and great Tasmanian produce is available daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week.
