Jonathan Brilliant “The Cairns Piece” Artwork Installation Cairns Festival 2012

Cairns Festival will kick off its 2012 season with a multi-dimensional program spanning music, art, dance, culture, comedy and entertainment in a free and ticketed program that rolls out from Friday 17 August until Sunday, 2 September

One of the highlights of the Cairns Festival 2012 is the Jonathan Brilliant Resident Artist Installation at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre.

Visitors to Cairns will have a unique opportunity to witness, watch and learn about the construction and subsequent demolition of the installation artwork at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre. This installation will be on display from Monday, 13 August – Thursday 23 August and the Exhibition on display from Friday, 24 August – Sunday, 2 September, 2012.

Jonathan Brilliant. a Cairns Festival Artist In Residence, is an artist based in North Carolina.  Jonathan will be creating an organic site specific installation in the new Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre by weaving thousands of wooden coffee stir sticks in place using only tension and compression – this is will be Cairns’ own piece, aptly entitled, “The Cairns Piece”.

Jonathan began his Goldsworthy of the coffee shop project in 2006, gathering materials in his natural environment and using them to execute site-specific installations. In Brilliant’s version, the natural environment is the coffee shop; his materials, the take-away coffee cup and all its accoutrements. “In this ongoing series of work, I explore my sense that the coffee shop and related consumer environs are more organic and nurturing than the ‘real’ natural environment,” Brilliant said.
