Hairspray the Hit Musical Opens Tonight

Hairspray, "The musical with a heart as big as a beehive", has its opening performance in Sydney tonight, Wednesday 22nd June 2011. When you walk about the streets of Central Sydeny you cant but notice all the large banners featuring the bright blue wigs hanging from the lightpoles.

In Hairspray, it's 1962, the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion - to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance programme, 'The Corny Collins Show' and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the programme's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in Hairspray! Welcome to the '60s!

HAIRSPRAY is a rare treat: a musical with a message. It says something that's important but says it with joy, energy and humour. We are all special and we are all different. HAIRSPRAY celebrates the differences, it will lift your spirits and fill your heart... So, welcome to the 60s and the musical with a heart as big as a beehive!

This all-Australian production of the multi-award winning Broadway musical is conceived and directed by show business legend David Atkins OAM and uses breathtaking, cutting-edge technology to transport audiences to a visually astonishing world where anything seems possible. With electric choreography by Jason Coleman, HAIRSPRAY the Musical is the theatrical experience of 2011 that will have you up on your feet dancing and stay with you long after you leave the theatre.
