Thailand’s Snow Sculpture Triumph: Celebrating Songkran in Sapporo

49th International Snow Sculpture Contest
Thailand once again showcased its artistic brilliance on the global stage, securing second place at the 49th International Snow Sculpture Contest in Sapporo. The Thai team’s breathtaking sculpture, inspired by the nation’s beloved Songkran Festival, captivated audiences and judges alike, reinforcing Thailand’s reputation for cultural excellence and creative mastery.

Held annually as part of the Sapporo Snow Festival, the prestigious competition brought together top sculptors from nine countries. This year, Thailand’s entry, World Water Festival, depicted a heartwarming scene of a mother and baby elephant joyfully playing during Songkran. The intricately detailed design paid homage to the deep-rooted traditions of Thailand’s New Year celebration while highlighting the festival’s recent recognition by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. The sculpture’s artistry and symbolism resonated with spectators, drawing admiration from visitors worldwide.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) played a key role in supporting the team, emphasizing the event’s significance in promoting Thailand’s soft power on an international platform. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool remarked that the contest provided a unique opportunity to share Thailand’s cultural heritage with the world, inspiring travelers to experience Songkran firsthand in its homeland. The festival, celebrated every April, is renowned for its lively water battles, family reunions, and spiritual traditions, embodying themes of renewal, respect, and joy.

Thailand’s legacy at Sapporo dates back to 1991, with the nation accumulating nine championship titles over the years. This year’s team—Kusol Bunkobsongserm, Kritsana Wongtes, and Amnoaysak Srisuk—continued this proud tradition, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication. Their participation was further supported by CRC Sports Co., Ltd., the official distributor of Columbia in Thailand, ensuring the team was well-equipped for the challenge of sculpting in the harsh winter conditions.

Beyond the competition, Thailand’s presence extended to interactive engagement with festival-goers. Visitors had the chance to take photos with the sculpture and receive colorful Thai elephant keychains, a charming memento symbolizing the country’s warm hospitality and rich artistic traditions.

The International Snow Sculpture Contest remains a prestigious global platform, bringing together artists from diverse cultures to celebrate creativity and craftsmanship. Thailand’s impressive performance in 2025 not only reinforced its artistic reputation but also strengthened its position as a leading cultural ambassador on the world stage.
