Australia’s Great Barrier Reef mass coral spawning

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef mass coral spawning takes place each November and early December and evening tours allow visitors the chance to see it.

An eruption that lasts for 20-30 minutes, the spawning is the entire Great Barrier Reef’s coral polyps simultaneously releasing egg and sperm bundles that they’ve spent months growing into the ocean for external fertilisation.

The underwater spectacle resembles the inside of a snowglobe and divers and snorkellers can choose from a variety of operators offering tours during the second spawning.

The special spawning itinerary features more night dives and allows for up to 12 dives (4 of which a night dives), and snorkelling.
