Tanabata is traditionally celebrated on 7 July in Japan, but the Sendai Tanabata Festival is held in August!

Sendai Tanabata Festival
Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, was the castle town of Date Masamune, a powerful military commander from the Edo period.

The Sendai Tanabata Festival is a traditional celebration that was passed down from Masamune's era.

However, unlike other Tanabata celebrations in Japan, this one follows a calendar that is one month later than the traditional Chinese calendar, and so is held from 6 to 8 August every year.

Attracting more than 2 million visitors each year, there are close to 300 colourful and bright Tanabata decorations on display.

One of the largest displays is a 60cm Kusudama ball with a 3m long streamer decorated with colourful ornaments.

Visitors can also get their festival fix from the stalls that line the street during the event period, all while enjoying the lively atmosphere!
