HOSHINOYA Okinawa, a luxury resort in Yomitan, Okinawa Prefecture, will host the Ryukyu Dessert Workshop, where guests can enjoy making Ryukyu desserts and drink tea in a private kitchen studio from 1 March to 30 June 2022. Okinawan food culture and its history can be learned at the Yugafu Kitchen whilst learning how to make Ryukyu desserts. The finished desserts are assorted with Ryukyu desserts prepared by our chef and served in the dining room of the Yugafu Kitchen with herb tea made from Okinawan herbs and citrus fruits. Limited to one group per day, guests can experience the deep food culture of Okinawa during their stay.
Background
Yugafu Kitchen, located within the premises of HOSHINOYA Okinawa, aims to share the profound charms of Okinawa’s food culture. This program is the first to be offered in the Yugafu Kitchen, which opened on 1 March 2022. Guests can experience Ryukyu dessert making in an open space where the sea breeze flows. Ryukyu desserts were served during the Ryukyu Kingdom era when they entertained envoys from China and Satsuma (present-day Kagoshima Prefecture). The delicate desserts that have been used for special events such as royal family celebrations and memorial services give guests a glimpse into the spirit of hospitality and Okinawa’s unique food culture that has developed through foreign relations. The staff of HOSHINOYA Okinawa will tell the story of Ryukyu desserts and prepare a space where guests can enjoy the finished desserts and tea for guests to experience the luxurious charms of Ryukyu desserts.
Characteristics of the Ryukyu Dessert Workshop
1)Private use of the Yugafu Kitchen, where the ocean breeze pass through
Yugafu Kitchen is a one-story building with a red-tiled roof within the premises of HOSHINOYA Okinawa. The kitchen studio, named Yugafu, meaning good harvest in the Okinawan language, aims to provide an opportunity for guests to learn and enjoy Okinawa’s unique food culture, which has been handed down since the Ryukyu dynasty. It has a spacious kitchen area and a dining room and is adjacent to a garden where herbs and vegetables familiar in Okinawa are grown. Guests can see the ocean from the large windows, where the gentle wind passes by.
2)Making unique Ryukyu desserts whilst cultural stories behind the dessert is told
During the 450 years since the establishment of the Ryukyu Kingdom, guests can listen to the stories of Ryukyu desserts that have supported the kingdom’s food culture and enjoy making 3 kinds of Ryukyu desserts with our staff. With the support of the staff, guests can experience the important processes without having to do everything from scratch, so beginners can easily participate as well. When making Hanabouru, which is characterized by cuts in a beautiful flower pattern, there will be a focus on the process of making a flower shape using a knife or spatula. During the experience, guests can make the desserts at their own pace so they have the freedom of taking a tea break or spending time in the garden to observe the herbs of Okinawa.
Examples of Ryukyu desserts to be made: Hanabouru (baked goods), Chinbin (Okinawan crepe), Sekakubi (dessert using tapioca)
3)Enjoy freshly made Ryukyu desserts and tea at a private dining
The finished Ryukyu dessert can be enjoyed in the dining area of the Yugafu Kitchen. In addition to the three types of freshly-made Ryukyu desserts, several varieties of Ryukyu desserts will be served, along with herb tea made using the leaves of karaki also known as Okinawan cinnamon, and herbs grown in the garden. A luxurious afternoon can be spent at the kitchen studio overlooking the lush green garden.
