The best season for chowing down will soon be upon us!

Donburi ~ a japanese sashimi bowl dish~
In Japan, we have the saying that autumn is the best time of year to eat and Oita Prefecture is well known throughout the country for its tasty seafood.

Especially in coastal cities like Saiki and Tsukumi, there are many restaurants offering delicious seafood.

Saiki city in particular is well known for its many marine products. Here, Kaisen-don (sashimi rice bowls) and sushi are popular dishes. Tsukimi on the other hand is known for its Hotozima Island which is a base for tuna fishing. Because of this, locals often dine on cuisine that includes tuna. Additionally, Hyuga-don is also popular too. This rice bowl features slices of tuna that have been marinated in sweet soy sauce.

These days, both sashimi and donburi (a.k.a rice bowls as pictured below) are becoming well known all over the world. The fish does not have a scent to it and also sports a nice texture. Many times, locals add shisho, green onions and wasabi to taste. These donburi all take full advantage of the fresh ingredient’s original flavours.
