Australians seek more meaningful and sustainable travel experiences, reveals Destination Queenstown

Australians are seeking out enriching travel experiences by looking to forge deep connections with people and places while on holiday, according to independent research commissioned by Destination Ǫueenstown.

The findings reveal our nation is socially minded overall, with almost nine out of 10 Australians making a point to learn about local culture and heritage when travelling.

Destination Ǫueenstown Chief Executive, Mat Woods, says the study on travel attitudes and holiday planning considerations suggests Australians are taking time to get to know and appreciate the places they visit and are looking for ways to get to know the locals.

“Australians are Ǫueenstown’s most important international market, and this research confirms their travel aspirations align strongly with our region’s vision for tourism to be regenerative, adding long term holistic value to communities, the environment and the economy,” he said.

Ǫueenstown’s innovative destination management plan, launched in 2023, outlines its vision to become a regenerative tourism destination by 2030 including the ambitious goal of achieving a carbon-zero visitor economy.

Ǫueenstown’s recent visitor experience research indicates that Australians who interact with locals have a better experience with a higher than average Net Promoter Score (NPS) and they’re more conscious of leaving the places they visit in better shape than when they arrived.

“Australians tend to stay longer, participate in more experiences, connect with locals and take the time to explore more deeply. Visitor experience research shows that Aussies who engage with our local community report having a more positive experience overall in Ǫueenstown and are more mindful of looking after the local environment when they travel, making them ideal visitors,” Woods said.

The latest research also reveals two out of three Australians are concerned about the environmental impact associated with their travels.

“We know Australians are concerned about the environment and their carbon footprint when travelling. Ǫueenstown’s direct short haul connection from Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney makes it an ideal destination for Australians to visit and we invite our neighbours to make the short trip across the ditch to experience everything our region has to offer,” Woods concluded.

Ǫueenstown’s regenerative tourism vision is outlined in the region’s destination management plan (Travel to a Thriving Future), a partnership between Destination Ǫueenstown, Lake Wānaka Tourism and Ǫueenstown Lakes District Council.

Summary of key research findings:
  • 88% of Australians say they prefer to look for locally owned and operated accommodation, tourism experiences and products and services.
  • 87% make a point to learn about local culture and heritage when travelling
  • 85% say they’re more interested in learning about the places they visit than taking photos or souvenirs.
  • 67% are concerned about their carbon footprint and the environmental impact of their travel.

Australians say the top priorities for the future of travel are conserving and respecting the environment, ensuring tourism benefits local economy and community and reducing the environmental impact of tourism.

Ha Noi specialty gets world billionaires

Mrs. Am's bun thang in a colorful bowl. Photo: Doan Nhat Anh
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was treated to a number of Vietnamese dishes during a trip to Vietnam late last year, including Mrs. Am's bun thang, or mixed-ingredient vermicelli soup. After indulging in two bowls of bun thang and two cups of iced black coffee, the billionaire admitted it was the best breakfast he had ever had.

Hanoi’s signature summit dish

It was a spring day a few years ago, on February 27, 2019, the famous Vuon Am Thuc or Culinary Garden Restaurant on Cua Nam Street was briefly closed as owner and chef Doan Van Lai was hard at work preparing her signature dish - Mrs. Am's Bun Thang - at the Hanoi Food Court in the Friendship Labor Cultural Palace. At that time it was the site of the international media center during the summit between North Korea and the United States in Hanoi.

"Even though my counter was four times larger than the others and I had fifteen employees working around the clock, I could hardly service all the customers. Some reporters came here for eight meals in four days, and each time they praised the food," Lai said.

To cater to the 3,500 international and local reporters, traditional food counters were set up with Hanoi specialties such as Pho Thin, Mrs. Lan's banh khuc, bun cha, Giang Cafe's egg coffee, West Lake lotus tea, and Mrs. Am's Bun Thang.

A crowd of diners waited patiently at Lai's counter to watch the chef's demonstration. After serving about 3,000 bowls of the noodles in two days, he said his counter had earned the fame of "top-class bun thang" and was featured on international news channels.

Four years later, under heightened security, a strange group of foreign guests arrived at the Vuon Am Thuc restaurant in four luxury cars. The owner was astonished to learn that the guest was the CEO of Nvidia, a $3.44 trillion technology behemoth, and the tenth richest person in the world, Taiwanese-American millionaire Jensen Huang. He had only ever seen the VIP on TV or in the newspaper. Jensen Huang was on a business trip to Vietnam to promote the country's semiconductor industry.

"After having two bowls of bun thang and two cups of black iced coffee from the restaurant, he admitted that he had never had such a delicious breakfast in all his years of traveling around the world. I'll always remember that statement," said the third-generation Mrs. Am's Bun Thang chef.

Special Vietnamese patrols

According to Lai, his grandmother, Le Thi Tho (alias Le Thi Hai), opened a bun thang stall on Cho Gao Street in 1888. It was one of the first food stalls in the old Dong Xuan market. Later, her daughter and Lai's mother, Dam Thi Am, continued the business.

"Tran Duy Hung, Chairman of the Hanoi Administrative Committee (Mayor), was fond of our bun thang. Like other customers, he always waited his turn in line. He was slim and thin and usually wore white glasses and a uniform. Every time he came, he would call out to order, 'The usual, Mrs. Am,'" Lai nostalgically recalled.

At that time, their stall was just a bamboo table with a few wooden benches. But every morning until noon, it was packed with customers. "You're not from the capital if you haven't eaten Mrs. Am's bun thang," many joked.

The late writer Bang Son, the famous Hanoi cuisine writer, could not miss the restaurant in his guide to Hanoi food: "There were couples who came here to eat bun thang when they were young. Even after their hair turned gray and they had children and grandchildren, they continued their habit of going to Dong Xuan Market together to find Mrs. Am's bun thang."

Since Lai moved the restaurant to Cua Nam Street, the restaurant has been serving a new customer base: overseas Vietnamese diners. "There was an old man in his 80s who had lived abroad for 30 years. After returning home, he went straight to Dong Xuan Market to look for Mrs. Am. Told by some merchants, he walked from Dong Xuan to Cua Nam to order a special bowl of bun thang. After eating, the satisfied customer said he had found the taste of bun thang he had missed for many years away from home," Lai said.

A gorgeous Hanoi specialty

As the name suggests, bun thang is made from bun, or rice noodles, and thang, a Sino-Vietnamese word meaning either "soup" or "mixture" of Oriental medicinal herbs. The soul of the dish is the simmered pork and chicken bone broth. In addition, bun thang combines up to 12 ingredients, including boneless chicken, dried shrimp, pork bologna, fried egg, shiitake mushrooms, fresh herbs, and more.

Bun thang's broth is clear and subtly sweet without being fishy, thanks to its unique formula. Along with a small shrimp paste, giant water bugs, pickled radish, shallots, cilantro, and Vietnamese coriander - the latter four chopped - the bowl of noodles is exquisitely arranged like a flower when presented to guests.

The dish is often garnished with lime and chili for a harmonious balance of flavors. It's a favorite among locals and visitors to Hanoi, often eaten as a comforting meal.

However, this Hanoi specialty is more difficult to find than other dishes such as banh cuon and pho bo. It is almost unavailable in other provinces outside of Vietnam's capital.

Thailand showcased sustainable tourism and earned prestigious recognition at ITB Asia 2024

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reinforces commitment to sustainable tourism and garners accolades at Asia’s premier travel trade show.

Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports, Mr. Sorawong Thienthong, together with Ambassador of Thailand to Singapore, Mrs. Ureerat Chareontoh, and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor, Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, recently presided over the opening ceremony of the Thailand Pavilion at ITB Asia 2024 in Singapore.

At ITB Asia, TAT showcased Thailand’s sustainable and responsible tourism initiatives, aligned with the government’s “IGNITE THAILAND’s TOURISM” vision. The Thailand Pavilion featured the Kingdom’s distinctive attractions, including the “Five Must-Do” experiences, which spotlighted Thailand’s unique charms in both renowned and lesser-known destinations. Visitors were invited to participate in hands-on D.I.Y. activities, crafting souvenirs from upcycled materials sourced from marine debris, reinforcing Thailand’s commitment to environmental guardianship.

In collaboration with the Phuket Tourism Association, TAT brought together 32 Thai tourism operators, including hotels, resorts, tour services, water parks, and golf clubs, alongside strategic partners TAGTHAI and Thailand Privilege Card. Over 800 business-to-business meetings were conducted, creating valuable new opportunities for Thai tourism enterprises.

During the event, Thailand received the “2024 Global Partner Award – Most Popular Destination” from Trip.com, reflecting the nation’s enduring appeal among international travellers and the strength of the partnership between TAT and Trip.com in promoting Thailand as a premier travel destination.

Last year, over one million Singaporean travellers visited Thailand, and this year, between January and 21 October, 747,994 Singaporeans had already arrived, with Bangkok, Songkhla, Phuket, Krabi, and Pattaya among the most popular destinations.

For 2024, TAT aims to attract over one million Singaporean visitors, generating a projected tourism revenue exceeding 48 billion Baht. Key target segments include cross-border and Fly & Drive travellers, Health & Wellness, sports tourists (especially those interested in golf, cycling, marathons, and Muay Thai), youth, and cruise passengers.

Vietnamese F&B industry works to catch up with green consumption trend

Ho Chi Minh City consumers prioritise products participating
in green consumption campaign (Photo: VNA)
By promoting the use of green materials and technologies in production, Vietnam will win the world food and beverage market which is switching to the green consumption trend, according to experts.

By promoting the use of green materials and technologies in production, Vietnam will win the world food and beverage market which is switching to the green consumption trend, according to experts.

Nguyen Duy Lam, President of Vietnam Association of Food Science and Technology (VAFoST), said that food ingredients play a vital role in food security and safety. Ingredients not only determine the taste and texture of food, but also influence the quality and create consumer acceptance trends, while ensuring the production of high-quality food and meet market demand.

He said that Vietnam is blessed with abundant resources, especially new raw materials, making it strong and potential to serve the sustainable food and beverage industry.

Lam highlighted the outstanding progress of the industry, noting that last year, the sector’s revenue ranked third in Southeast Asia, only after Indonesia and the Philippines.

Food processing has become one of Vietnam's key industries, accounting for a proportion of 19.1% in the processing-manufacturing industry, the Vietnam Association of Food Science and Technology President underlined.

The green consumption trend after the COVID-19 pandemic as well as Vietnam’s wide network of free trade agreements with many partners have helped promote the export of Vietnamese food and beverage ingredients to international markets.

However, some experts held that for sustainable development, the Vietnamese food and beverage industry needs close cooperation among all stakeholders, while focusing on improving product quality by developing raw material sources and applying advanced technology and building a sustainable supply chain.

Along with the rising demand in the Vietnamese market, the food and beverage industry in Vietnam has achieved an average annual growth rate of 10%-12%, which is the foundation for international businesses to gain deeper access to the Vietnamese market through typical local products produced and processed to international standards.

Jim O'Toole, Chief Executive Officer of the Irish Food Authority (Bord Bia), said that Vietnamese consumers are increasingly interested in transparency about the origin of food, so the potential for promoting Irish food and beverage products in the Vietnamese market is huge. As Ireland is a country that stands out for green production with strict standards on food safety and sustainability, the country can meet the needs of Vietnamese consumers at present and in the future, he said.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Phan Thi Thang held that strengthening trade promotion activities is important to promote the food and beverage industry and create opportunities for domestic and foreign enterprises to introduce products. It also aids production and processing technology, helping domestic and foreign enterprises meet and seek partnership, thus expanding trade between Vietnam and other countries.

Thang predicted that the scale of the Vietnamese food and beverage market will continue to grow and reach more than 720 trillion VND (28,46 billion USD) in 2024, an increase of 10.92% compared to 2023. With the trend of consumers favouring green and sustainable products, the Vietnamese food and beverage market is also constantly transforming towards sustainability across the entire value chain of both domestic and imported products.

The special flavour of Shan Tuyet tea from Lao Cai province won the hearts of the judging panel at the “Teas of the World” international competition, as announced by the Agency for the Valorization of Agricultural Products (AVPA) in France.

Both Vietnamese tea entries, including Trà Rồng đỏ Hoàng Liên Sơn (Flying Red Dragon) and Trà Ký ức Hoàng Liên Sơn (Hoang Lien Son Memory), brought home two bronze awards.

An impressive award went to another tea, Trà Thác nước Hoàng Liên Sơn (Hoang Lien Son Waterfall) which is also from Lao Cai province.

Grown at 1500 metres above sea level amidst the clouds and mist, Lao Cai Shan Tuyet tea captures the essence of its mountainous terrain. Lao Cai Shan Tuyet tea is a true testament to the craftsmanship and dedication practiced by the H'Mong ethnic people.

Shan Tuyet tea represents the first five-star OCOP product of Lao Cai that has been exported to the United States and Europe. An awards ceremony will be held on November 4 in France, with the event helping to promote Vietnamese tea to the international market.

Earlier in the “Teas of the World” international competition, Vietnamese tea from the northern provinces of Thai Nguyen, Ha Giang, Yen Bai, Son La, and Lai Chau were honoured in 2018, 2019, and 2022.

A total of two gold, four silver, three bronze, and seven impressive prizes ultimately went to Vietnamese tea.
