Tourism Saskatoon Demonstrates Commitment to Reconciliation through Partnership with the Saskatoon Tribal Council

For the first time in Saskatoon’s history, the Saskatoon Tribal Council led a grand entry at SaskTel Centre to open the Tim Horton’s Curling Trials. This historic event was made possible by uniting in partnership with Tourism Saskatoon.

Curling Canada made a commitment to open the Tim Horton’s Curling Trials in Saskatoon by acknowledging the territorial protocols of Treaty 6 Territory in the opening ceremony. There was a traditional blanket ceremony following the grand entry. Tribal Chief Arcand and Tourism Saskatoon’s CEO, Steph Clovechok presented each curling team with a star blanket as a gift and welcomed them to Treaty 6 Territory.

The Saskatoon Tribal Council will be invited to present at all major events in Saskatoon, partnering with Tourism Saskatoon and other organizations to provide meaningful opportunities for reconciliation. Tourism Saskatoon says this is the new norm as they advance, ensuring that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Call to Action #92, is acted upon.

The tourism industry has an important role to play on the path to reconciliation. Tourism can support Indigenous cultures, strengthen prosperity, and honour Indigenous communities. Tourism can be a platform for truthful storytelling and the awakening of Canadians to the realities of our national history. This partnership demonstrates the powerful impact that tourism and events can have towards reconciliation, through creating opportunities for education on a national stage.
