Mates of the Territory to boost tourism in Northern territory

Nine Network’s show co-host and popular media personality, Lisa Wilkinson, is among a high-profile group of Australians named as Mates of the Territory.

Minister for Tourism Matt Conlan said Mates of the Territory was an exciting new initiative by Tourism NT that will help boost domestic visitor numbers to the Territory.

“Word of mouth is the most successful form of marketing available and that is what our new Mates of the Territory initiative is all about,” said Mr Conlan.

“Our high-profile Mates will help us show people how to ‘Do the NT’ by answering questions, sharing advice, posting information and highlighting everything that makes the NT a unique and unbeatable holiday experience.

“Research shows that more than 30 per cent of people have heard about a holiday to the NT through recommendations from families and friends.

“Our new Mates have a strong influence across a variety of networks where they can spread our message and represent a broad cross-section of the community including pop culture, sport, social media, traditional travel, or food and wine to ensure we’re reaching a wide audience.

“I’m particularly pleased to have Lisa Wilkinson on board as a new Mate. She is a wonderful ambassador and has a wide appeal around Australia especially in our key target market which is the cashed up over 55 baby boomers.”

The TODAY Show co-host said she was equally delighted to become a Mate of the Territory.

“It’s been great to be up here in Darwin this weekend working with Tourism NT as a new Mate of the Territory,” said Mrs Wilkinson.

“We’ve been to the Deck Chair Cinema, Litchfield, Kakadu. I’ve braved the cage of death, taken a sunset cruise on Darwin Harbour and toured the fantastic Defence of Darwin experience. My love for the Territory continues to grow and I look forward to sharing all my experiences and tips with travellers.”

The high-profile Mates of the Territory will share their love of the NT to fellow Aussies through media, social media, trade and partner activity, and direct to consumers. They are:
  • Lisa Wilkinson
  • Matthew Hayden
  • Mark Beretta
  • Mark Skaife
  • Lauren Bath
  • Lynton Tapp
  • Tahan Lew Fatt
  • Layne Beachley
  • Shari Sebbens
“Our fantastic Mates that have been invited to be a part of the program have a strong connection to the NT; whether they grew up or lived here for a period, or have travelled here regularly before because they absolutely love it,” said Mr Conlan

“As part of the initiative, the Mates will call upon fellow travellers that love the NT to also become our Mates and get involved promoting the NT on social media through the hashtag askNTmates.

“They’ll do it by asking and answering questions through social media, using the hashtag askNTmates. People that want to know about the NT can ask a question, and our Mates can help us answer them.

“I call upon everyone that loves the NT – locals and visitors alike – to get on board and become Mates of the Territory. Get involved using the hashtag #askNTmates and tell everyone why they need to Do the NT today.

“The Country Liberals Government is committed to growing our tourism industry, demonstrated by our ongoing $8 million additional investment as part of the 2014 Tourism Budget.

“The Country Liberals Government has a plan to boost the number of tourists to the NT as part of the vision to develop Northern Australia and deliver $2.2 billion in visitor expenditure by 2020.”
