NSW Government Supports 19th Biennale of Sydney

The NSW Government will invest more than $1.4 million to support the 19th Biennale of Sydney, which will open in March 2014.

“The NSW Government recognises the boost to the economy that major events such as the Biennale of Sydney provide, particularly through attracting visitors to the city,” Minister for Tourism, Major Events and the Arts, George Souris said.

“The number of visitors to the Biennale of Sydney has more than doubled over the past three events.

“There were more than 665,000 visits across all venues to the 18th Biennale in 2012 and almost 170,000 people visited the Biennale from outside Sydney, with many of these people visiting Sydney specifically for this event.”

The Deloitte Access Economics report on the Biennale estimated that the three-month event in 2012 contributed about $56 million to the NSW economy.

“These figures emphasise the value of arts and cultural events to the State,” Mr Souris said.

“The Biennale of Sydney also plays a vital role in stimulating artistic and creative endeavour, showcasing contemporary ideas and providing artists with the opportunity to exhibit in diverse locations and non-traditional venues.”

The 19th Biennale of Sydney is a three-month exhibition in venues throughout Sydney including, the Art Gallery of NSW, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, and Cockatoo Island and Carriageworks.

The title of the Biennale, You Imagine What You Desire, is intended to remind people that powerful art is part of the cultural conditions and the political, social and climatic environments in which it is created.

The NSW Government is supporting the 19th Biennale of Sydney through Arts NSW and its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

The Biennale of Sydney will run from 21 March to 9 June 2014.
