Mega sporting events bringing fans to Queensland

It’s been a lengthy build up and finally the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off this week, bringing tens of thousands of fans from around the world to Queensland for eight matches including the Bronze medal match. Tourism Australia has this week launched an international campaign – ‘Holiday Highlights’ – targeting the key competing markets. With more than a billion people set to tune in globally, it is a key opportunity to showcase Queensland and Australia’s holiday offerings to this audience.

Queensland’s position as a sporting capital has also been further cemented this week with the announcement of the first Test of the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour to be hosted in Brisbane. The event expects to attract 30,000 visitors to travel from the United Kingdom for the game - a significant opportunity for our visitor economy (see more below).

This weekend will also mark the nine year countdown to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with celebrations being staged right across South East Queensland. In further positive sporting events news, an AFLW game has also been announced for Cairns this week, to be played at Cazalys Stadium this October.
