Representing a legendary animal from Fukushima’s Aizu region, the Akabeko is said to represent the cows that helped local builders during the construction of Enzojo-ji Temple.
Today, these red statuettes with bobbing heads are popular in Fukushima – they are not only given as gifts to celebrate the birth of children, and are also talismans for protection from diseases.
