CNN Features Guilin’s Jingjiang Palace – China’s “Other ‘Forbidden City’”

Guilin’s Jingjiang Palace
Guilin is a picturesque city located in the northeastern part of south China’s Guangxi province.

It sits on the Li River and is known not only for the meandering river, but also for its breathtaking terraced fields and its massive craggy karst pinnacles.

A recent article from CNN highlights Guilin, specifically its lesser-known Jingjian Palace.

The palace – also known as Jingjiang Princes’ City – sits at the center of Guilin city.

It was built in the 14th century, making it a royal complex that dates back earlier than the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Jingjiang is just as stunning but markedly less crowded.

Over the course of its 250 year history during the Ming Dynasty, the mansion at Jingjian was home to 14 princes, and the complex has more than 50 classic buildings set within mile-long perimeter walls.

Temples, peaks, views of Guilin city and the surrounding countryside, and the Chengyuan Palace are must-sees on the grounds.

Jingjiang is also now part of the Guangxi University campus, so students are a part of today’s scenery.

Regardless of the new modern visitors, the Palace still stands as one of China’s best preserved royal enclaves from the Ming Dynasty.
