The chimpanzee’s Mother, Shiba is 33 years old and was found cradling the newborn by the keepers at Taronga Zoo on Saturday morning.
Taronga Zoo’s Primate Supervisor, Lou Grossfeldt said “Shiba has shown her calmness and great experience since the birth, cradling and shielding the infant, so much so that keepers haven’t been able to confirm the baby’s sex yet.”
“The youngster is quite vocal when not dozing in its mother’s arms and appears very healthy,” he said.
The baby has a sister Sembe, and two brothers, Shabani and Samaki and as Mother Shiba keeps her infant close, visitors to Taronga Zoo may be able to spot the baby’s head, hands and feet occasionally poking out. A name will soon be chosen by the Zoo’s Keeper’s that reflects the baby’s nature.
The last chimpanzee to be born at Taronga Zoo, Fumo, was born in October last year.
Taronga Zoo has an ongoing partnership with the Jane Goodall Foundation’s Tchimpounga Rehabilitation Centre in Congo, which helps chimpanzees rescued from poachers and the pet industry.
