SRI LANKA UPDATE - FRIDAY 15TH JULY, 2022

Sri Lanka has been on the news since of late & we have kept you updated continuously. Unfortunately, news presents only one slice, often an exaggerated one, that rarely tells a complete story. Certainly, our perspectives said within, do not match with the perspective of the outside world, largely dependent on media stories obscured by agendas.

The Speaker of the Parliament officially announced the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on 15th July. He further confirms that the Parliament will convene on Saturday, 16th July to begin the process of electing a new President through the Parliament & the new President will be elected by the 20th of July. An all-party interim government is to be formed which is in line with the recommendation of the IMF and will be in process thereafter.

The armed forces have been empowered to ensure the city of Colombo remains calm and to prevent any form of violence. The curfew imposed yesterday at noon ended this morning at 5 am. The protesters who carried out the revolution against ousting the President yesterday (14th July) decided to hand over the government buildings they have occupied, including the President’s House, Prime Minister’s Residence & office. Presidential Secretariat will continue to occupy the protesters until the Interim Government takes office.

The much-expected gas shipments arrived earlier this week and the distribution of gas island-wide has been a relief to those waiting for months. The government with the assistance of the ADB have made payments for future shipments to ensure the supply of gas for the rest of the year. Meanwhile, fuel shipments were expected to arrive yesterday and a further four fuel shipments are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka on the 17th of July, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) says. According to the CPC, three diesel shipments of 40,000 metric tons each and 35,000 metric tons, as well as a shipment of Octane 92 Petrol are anticipated.

The IMF has agreed to continue talks once the new government is formed and has reassured its support to assist Sri Lanka’s economic recovery.

All tourist attractions remain open and all our current tours continue to operate without any inconvenience to the guest. We would recommend avoiding the city of Colombo for our future tours until the ground situation becomes calmer & New Government takes office.

Warm wishes,
