Australia’s ultimate twitchers retreat opens in Queensland

The Feathered Nest
The Feathered Nest, a luxury wildlife retreat located just 30 minutes from Mackay, has opened its first villa which features a private aviary and infinity pool. The ultimate twitchers paradise, owner Gordon Lockie is a registered breeder of the cockatoos and has a number of species in his collection that are endangered in Australia and lovingly housed at The Feathered Nest.

Create a special memory of your holiday by experiencing the rich sounds and colours of our truly unique Australian flora and fauna. You will be amazed by the abundant wildlife at The Feathered Nest - make sure you take a leisurely stroll around the gardens and learn about the birds and animals attracted to the area.

At the heart of the property are our purpose-built enclosures designed to showcase our collection of breathtaking Australian black cockatoos. Many of these cockatoos are rarer species which you are unlikely to see anywhere else but at The Feathered Nest.

Each day we give you the opportunity to help feed the cockatoos, including preparing the food and assisting in the enclosure. Gordon, our resident black cockatoo expert, is on hand to answer your questions and take you through the special breeding program he runs at The Feathered Nest.

The property also contains a rich variety of other native wetland birds including grebes, cormorants, brolgas, ducks and the Australian black swan. As you explore the lush, tropical grounds you will be able to see them in their natural habitat and hopefully gain a special appreciation for these beautiful creatures.

Wallaby
Of course we have many non-feathered friends too such as kangaroos, wallabies, turtles and fish—many of which you will see from the comfort of your private deck.
