A New Chapter for Sustainable Tourism in Yangon

The Yangon Heritage Walking Tour Experience has been introduced under the Yangon Heritage and Sustainable Tourism Working Group 2026, a collaborative initiative established to protect Yangon's unique architectural heritage while supporting the long-term growth of Myanmar's tourism industry.

The working group is led by Daw Chaw Chaw Kyae Mone, Chair of the Human Resource Development Committee of the Union of Myanmar Travel Association.

The programme reflects a growing global trend towards sustainable travel, encouraging visitors to slow down, explore local communities on foot and gain a deeper appreciation of the city's history, culture and architectural treasures.

Training the Next Generation of Tourism Professionals

An important feature of the project is the involvement of students undertaking the Tourism Digital Marketing Course, organised by the UMTA Human Resource Development Committee.

Twenty-two trainees participated in the inaugural heritage walking tour, gaining practical experience while learning about Yangon's remarkable collection of heritage buildings and visitor attractions.

Guided by experienced heritage guide U Sithu Tun Soe Oo, the participants explored the city while developing valuable knowledge and skills that will contribute to Myanmar's future tourism industry.

The walking tour began at Mahabandula Park, one of Yangon's best-known public spaces and home to the city's iconic Independence Monument.

From there, participants followed a carefully planned route through the historic downtown precinct, visiting an impressive collection of significant government buildings, financial institutions, religious landmarks and colonial-era architecture.

Highlights included the Western District Court, Myanmar Economic Bank branches, the Myanmar Agriculture Development Bank, Inland Water Transport offices, Pension Department, the new Union Supreme Court, Settlement and Land Records Department, former Myawaddy Bank, the former United States Embassy, the former Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Yangon City Hall, Ayeyawaddy Bank headquarters, the High Court of Yangon Region, the Central Telegraph Office, the Internal Revenue Department, Lokanat Building, Rural Development Bank, Sarpay Beikman, Gandhi Hall, the Armenian Apostolic Church of St John the Baptist, the historic Central Post Office, the British Embassy, the legendary Strand Hotel, Myanmar Airways and the Myanmar Port Authority.

The itinerary also included visits to two of Yangon's most famous landmarks—Sule Pagoda and the historic Secretariat Office, where participants were given the opportunity to explore the upper floor of one of Myanmar's most historically significant buildings.
