Throughout yesterday's hosted programme, Auckland, New Zealand's largest city, set the stage for an inspiring opening day as I joined fellow international media delegates at MEETINGS 2026, the country's premier business events trade exhibition. Hosted in the vibrant city of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, the day provided an immersive introduction to the people, places, innovation and sustainability initiatives that are shaping Auckland's future as a leading global destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions.
From waterfront hospitality to regenerative tourism experiences, the first day offered a fascinating glimpse into a city where culture, nature and forward-thinking development work hand in hand.
A Waterfront Welcome at Hilton Auckland
The first thing in the morning was a memorable breakfast at Hilton Auckland, perfectly positioned on Princes Wharf overlooking the sparkling waters of the Waitematā Harbour. As the sun rose over the harbour, delegates gathered to begin a day designed to showcase Auckland's unique character and vision.
The waterfront setting immediately highlighted one of Auckland’s greatest assets – its deep connection to both land and sea. With yachts gently moving across the harbour and the city skyline providing a dramatic backdrop, it was an ideal introduction to New Zealand’s largest urban centre.
Discovering Regenerative Travel with Velskov
During the breakfast Mamakan from Velskov spoke about the pioneering native forest farm dedicated to regenerative travel and sustainable experiences. The presentation offered a compelling insight into how tourism can actively contribute to environmental restoration while creating meaningful visitor experiences.
Velskov’s philosophy centres around reconnecting people with New Zealand’s native forests, traditional knowledge and locally sourced ingredients. Delegates learned about the company’s immersive Bush Boardroom experience, which combines business gatherings with nature-based learning in a native forest environment. Each breakfast guest was invited to select and name a plant that would later be planted on the property. I named mine Matilda, after one of my granddaughters, and because it is such an iconic Australian name.
The discussion explored how Auckland’s visitor experiences are increasingly grounded in environmental stewardship, cultural authenticity and personal wellbeing. Native ingredients and forest foods formed an important part of the storytelling, demonstrating how regenerative tourism can create economic, social and environmental benefits simultaneously.
Experiencing the Spirit of Tāmaki Taumata Rau
Throughout the day’s hosted programme, a recurring theme was the meaning behind Tāmaki Taumata Rau, one of Auckland’s traditional Māori names. Often translated as "Tāmaki of Many Peaks", the name reflects the region’s volcanic landscape while symbolising aspiration, achievement and collective ambition.
Every element of the programme was carefully curated to reflect this spirit. From hospitality and food systems to infrastructure projects and city development, Auckland presented itself as a destination that embraces innovation while maintaining a strong connection to its cultural heritage and natural environment.
This balanced approach is increasingly important for international visitors seeking authentic travel experiences that also demonstrate sustainability and community engagement.
Auckland’s Growing Reputation for Sustainable Tourism
One of the most impressive aspects of the day was Auckland’s commitment to regenerative and sustainable tourism. Rather than simply reducing negative impacts, many local organisations are now focused on creating positive outcomes for both communities and the environment.
Experiences such as those offered by Velskov demonstrate how tourism operators are integrating conservation, education and cultural storytelling into visitor experiences. This approach aligns with growing global demand for responsible travel that allows visitors to engage more deeply with destinations while supporting local ecosystems and communities.
For business event organisers, this commitment to sustainability also provides compelling opportunities to incorporate meaningful environmental and cultural elements into conferences, meetings and incentive programmes.
A Strong Start to MEETINGS 2026
The opening day as a hosted media delegate provided far more than a simple introduction to Auckland. It revealed a city that is confidently positioning itself as a world-class destination for both leisure and business events, while remaining deeply connected to its people, culture and environment.
From the welcoming hospitality of Hilton Auckland to the inspiring regenerative tourism vision presented by Velskov, the day offered valuable insights into Auckland’s evolving tourism landscape. It was an excellent beginning to what promises to be an exciting and informative experience at MEETINGS 2026.
As the programme continues, Auckland is already proving why it is increasingly recognised as one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.
