As one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing tourism markets, Viet Nam is now emerging as a regional leader in responsible travel, attracting visitors who value meaningful and sustainable journeys.
The Rise of Sustainable Travel in Viet Nam
This growing awareness places Viet Nam at the forefront of sustainable tourism in Asia. Travellers are increasingly making conscious decisions about where they go, how they travel, and the impact they leave behind.
Across the region, sustainability is gaining importance, but Vietnamese travellers stand out for their strong commitment to reducing environmental impact and preserving natural resources.
Environmental Awareness Driving Travel Choices
Issues such as plastic waste reduction, marine conservation, and climate resilience are increasingly influencing travel decisions. Many travellers now actively seek ways to lower their carbon footprint, with 29 percent identifying environmental impact as their primary motivation for choosing sustainable travel options.
This shift reflects a broader cultural awareness, as both locals and visitors recognise the importance of protecting Viet Nam’s diverse ecosystems, from tropical coastlines to mountainous forests.
Supporting Local Communities Through Tourism
Many travellers prioritise experiences that directly benefit local communities. Around 28 percent say supporting local livelihoods is the most important outcome of sustainable travel, while 45 percent believe tourism should drive economic growth for small businesses.
This mindset has contributed to the rapid rise of community-based tourism across the country, where visitors can stay in local homes, participate in traditional crafts, and engage with authentic cultural experiences.
Award-Winning Sustainable Villages in Viet Nam
These include Tân Hoá, Thái Hải Village, Trà Quế Vegetable Village, Lô Chải Village, and Quỳnh Sơn Community Tourism Village.
These villages offer immersive travel experiences that combine cultural preservation with sustainable development, allowing visitors to connect deeply with local traditions while supporting rural economies.
The Demand for Eco-Friendly Accommodation
Viet Nam ranks among the top markets globally for interest in eco-certified accommodation, with 43 percent of travellers actively seeking hotels and resorts that meet recognised sustainability standards.
In response, many hospitality providers are adopting eco-friendly practices such as renewable energy use, waste reduction initiatives, and community engagement programs, ensuring that tourism growth aligns with environmental preservation.
Why Viet Nam is Leading Asia’s Green Travel Movement
Viet Nam’s rise as a sustainable travel leader reflects a powerful shift in mindset. Travellers are no longer focused solely on destinations but on the impact of their journeys.
By prioritising environmental protection, supporting local communities, and embracing responsible tourism practices, Viet Nam is setting a new standard for travel in Asia.
For visitors in 2026, the country offers more than breathtaking landscapes and rich culture. It provides an opportunity to travel with purpose, contribute positively, and be part of a global movement toward a more sustainable future.
