From croissant hybrids to architectural landmarks and fruit-filled legends, this next chapter of my donut journey dives deeper into the sweet soul of LA.
1) DK’s Donuts & Bakery: Home of the Iconic O-Nut
In Santa Monica, DK's Donuts & Bakery is a 24-hour institution with a fascinating history and a fiercely loyal following.
Founded in 1981 by Cambodian immigrants, the shop blends tradition with bold innovation. Walking in, the retro décor and welcoming atmosphere set the tone for what felt like a true local gem.
I went straight for their signature Double Decker O-Nut, a croissant-donut hybrid that has achieved cult status. The texture was outstanding, flaky on the outside and soft inside, with a rich glaze that balanced sweetness perfectly.
I also sampled their famous ube donut, a vibrant purple creation with layers of flavour from cream cheese, coconut, and subtle nuttiness. It was unlike anything I had tasted before, making DK’s a must-visit for adventurous donut lovers.
2) Donut Friend: Where Music Meets Donuts

Created by musician Mark Trombino, the shop blends punk rock energy with creative baking. The walls feature quirky artwork, setting a fun and slightly rebellious tone.
I tried the Jimmy Eat Swirl, a cinnamon roll-style donut that was rich, warm, and comforting. The standout, however, was the Yo La Mango, topped with mango glaze, lime zest, and a hint of cayenne. The combination of sweet, tangy, and spicy flavours was unexpectedly brilliant.
Donut Friend offers a completely different donut experience, where creativity and personality shine through every bite.
3) The Donut Hole: A Drive-Through LA Landmark

This iconic location is famous for its programmatic architecture, where customers literally drive through giant donut structures to place their orders. It is a quintessential Los Angeles experience that blends novelty with nostalgia.
After soaking in the visual spectacle, I ordered a classic glazed donut. Simple yet satisfying, it delivered that familiar comfort of a well-made traditional donut.
While the donuts are classic, the experience is what truly sets this stop apart. It is a reminder that in Los Angeles, even a donut shop can become a cultural landmark.
4) The Donut Man: Legendary Fruit-Filled Creations

Established in 1972, this family-run shop has gained fame for its oversized, fruit-filled donuts. I visited during strawberry season, eager to try their most celebrated creation.
The strawberry donut exceeded all expectations. Packed with fresh, juicy strawberries and coated in a light glaze, it was both refreshing and indulgent. The size alone made it a two-handed experience, more like enjoying a dessert sandwich than a typical donut.
This is not just a donut, it is a seasonal ritual that draws visitors from across California.
5) Friends & Family: A Modern Bakery Reinventing the Classic Donut

I tried the Sticky Oat Donut, made with toasted oat flour and topped with rich caramel and crunchy pecans. The texture was slightly heartier than a traditional donut, with a warm, nutty flavour that stood out.
It felt both indulgent and refined, proving that even a simple donut can be elevated into something truly special.
Why These Donut Shops Stand Out in Los Angeles
Each of these four locations showcases a different side of Los Angeles’ donut culture. DK’s pushes boundaries with inventive creations, Donut Friend blends music and flavour, The Donut Hole delivers unforgettable visuals, and The Donut Man perfects fruit-filled indulgence.
Together, they highlight why Los Angeles remains unmatched in its donut diversity. Whether you are seeking innovation, nostalgia, or pure indulgence, the city offers something for every taste.
