Falls Creek Alpine Resort is set to welcome skiers and snowboarders this winter with enhanced lift infrastructure following the completion of significant haul rope works on one of its busiest high-speed quad chairlifts, Halley’s Comet.

Halley’s Comet Lift Receives Major Upgrade

Halley’s Comet, a high-speed quad chairlift essential for accessing beginner and intermediate terrain, underwent a full haul rope replacement over the off-season. The haul rope, measuring 1,850 metres and weighing approximately 7,350 kilograms, was carefully spliced by lift specialists to form a continuous loop, ensuring safe and reliable operation throughout the coming seasons.

John Palmer, Falls Creek’s senior operations manager, described the upgrade as a major engineering achievement and a critical part of maintaining the resort’s lift network. The Halley’s Comet lift provides access to the Snowsports School, Cloud 9, and several popular runs, making it vital for both new and returning guests.

A Complex and Precise Operation

Replacing a haul rope is a highly technical and manual process. The two rope ends are de-tensioned, carefully woven together, and spliced to create a seamless loop. Once installed, the lift operates for 50 hours to ensure precise functionality before undergoing final testing. This meticulous work guarantees the lift’s compliance with safety standards while reducing the need for unscheduled replacements during the busy winter season.

With Halley’s Comet fully operational and other summer maintenance completed, Falls Creek’s lift network is fully prepared for the opening of the 2026 snow season on Saturday 6 June.
