All Aboard: Newcastle Anchors Bold New Vision for Regional Cruise Tourism

Newcastle Port
Newcastle’s iconic harbour played host to more than ships in a recent week—it welcomed a powerful new alliance charting the future of cruise tourism across New South Wales. Seven local councils and two leading tourism bodies came together to officially launch a transformative partnership designed to unlock the full potential of the regional cruise industry.

A United Front for Regional Growth

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding marked the start of a three-year collaboration led by the Port Authority of NSW, bringing together a formidable group: Newcastle Council, Lake Macquarie Council, Cessnock Council, Singleton Council, Port Stephens Council, Maitland Council, Central Coast Council, along with Destination Sydney Surrounds North and the Newcastle Tourism Industry Group.

This unique coalition aims to enhance cruise passenger experiences while generating tangible benefits for local economies through smart, coordinated tourism development. At its core, the agreement is a commitment to cooperation—bridging council boundaries to create a seamless visitor experience that spans coast, country, and

A Cruise Coordinator for a Regional Vision

A key initiative announced during the meeting was the joint funding of a part-time Cruise Coordinator. This specialist role will work directly with cruise lines to design and expand shore excursions that showcase the Hunter and Central Coast regions. From boutique vineyards in the Hunter Valley to the beaches of Lake Macquarie and the rich cultural history of Newcastle, future itineraries will highlight the diversity and depth of experiences available to cruise passengers.

By ensuring these excursions are tailored and immersive, the initiative is expected to drive longer stays, higher visitor spend, and new job opportunities across the region.

Strategic Momentum for the Next Decade

John McKenna, CEO of Port Authority of NSW, said the agreement was a crucial step toward building a sustainable, community-driven cruise economy.

“This partnership is about more than just welcoming cruise ships. It’s about showcasing the incredible experiences the regions have to offer—from the natural beauty of the Central Coast and the Hunter Valley’s world-class wine country to the vibrant energy of Newcastle itself,” he said.

Martin Bidgood, General Manager Cruise for the Port Authority, added that this MoU represented a milestone in the broader regional cruise strategy. “This is a one-of-a-kind model for the Hunter and Central Coast region. It’s the natural next step following Port Authority’s expansion of cruise operations into Newcastle Harbour under the 10-year licence agreement announced last year.”

Learning from Regional Success

The initiative draws inspiration from Port Authority’s success in Eden, which has emerged as a national example of best-practice regional cruise development. Newcastle and its surrounding councils are now poised to replicate and adapt that model, tailored to the distinct personality and potential of each participating area.

As regional NSW continues to build its reputation on the world cruise stage, partnerships like this ensure the infrastructure, experiences, and community support are in place to make every port of call memorable.
