A Bold Vision for Sustainable Tourism

Vientiane, the peaceful capital of Laos nestled along the Mekong River, is stepping confidently into the future with a new initiative aimed at redefining its tourism landscape. Under the theme “Vientiane’s Sustainable Tourism,” the Lao government has launched an ambitious project that fuses innovative technology with eco-conscious development. The goal is to not only attract more visitors, but also enhance their experience while preserving the city's cultural and environmental identity.

This groundbreaking initiative is a joint effort between the Department of Information, Culture, and Tourism of Vientiane Capital and Thailand-based Packon Company Limited. The partnership was formalised with a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 28 January, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter for the city.

Research-Driven Growth With Local Charm

At the heart of the project is a strong commitment to research-led planning. The collaboration will explore opportunities to upgrade existing attractions and uncover new ones that can be developed in environmentally responsible ways. The aim is to establish a business model that aligns economic growth with sustainability, allowing Vientiane to grow without sacrificing the charm and authenticity that make it unique.

Sites along the Mekong River and That Luang Lake are being eyed for enhancement. Plans include revitalising the riverside night market, developing scenic pedestrian walkways, and improving access to heritage landmarks—all while keeping sustainability at the forefront.

Building a Smarter, Greener Capital

To support its growing tourism ambitions, Vientiane is also making major infrastructure upgrades. Improvements will focus on water supply, clean energy, drainage, and wastewater treatment—foundations essential to both tourism and everyday urban life. Reliable electricity, efficient resource management, and upgraded utilities will help meet the needs of both visitors and locals.

In a tech-forward move, the city is rolling out advanced communication systems including expanded Wi-Fi zones and 5G networks. These upgrades will facilitate improved data management across city services and contribute to safer, healthier, and more connected urban spaces.

Seamless Travel Powered by Technology

Tourist convenience is a top priority in Vientiane’s transformation. A suite of mobile applications is in development to assist travellers and service providers alike. These apps will offer real-time information on everything from accommodations and restaurants to transportation, shopping, and cultural sites. With integrated guidance systems and user-friendly interfaces, exploring the city will become smoother and more engaging.

Electric tour buses will soon be added to the capital’s public transport system, providing eco-friendly sightseeing opportunities. These buses aim to become a new symbol of modern Vientiane—clean, efficient, and in harmony with the city’s sustainability goals.

Towards an International Standard, With Local Soul

The initiative doesn’t stop at physical upgrades. It seeks to position Vientiane as a model for sustainable tourism in Southeast Asia, blending international quality with deeply rooted cultural traditions. By carefully integrating modern conveniences into a city steeped in history, the project will allow Vientiane to welcome the world without losing what makes it special.

Tourism in Vientiane is set to become more inclusive, interactive, and environmentally conscious, offering visitors meaningful experiences while uplifting local communities.
