Discover Urban Luxury at Its Finest: My Stay at The Hotel Britomart, Auckland

The Hotel Britomart
A Design Lover’s Dream in the Heart of the City

After attending MEETINGS 2025 in Auckland this June, I chose to stay at The Hotel Britomart, and it quickly became one of the highlights of my trip. Nestled in the vibrant waterfront precinct, this hotel offers far more than just a place to rest. It’s a thoughtfully designed retreat that blends modern luxury with sustainability—a perfect fit for travellers like me who value style, comfort, and mindful living.

The hotel’s location in the lively Britomart neighbourhood meant I was just steps away from chic boutiques, cozy cafés, art galleries, and some of the city’s best waterfront dining. The area buzzes with energy, yet the hotel itself felt like a calm oasis amid the urban excitement.

Designed by Cheshire Architects, the building’s reclaimed brick façade speaks to Auckland’s rich industrial history, while inside, handcrafted timber details and soft natural textures created a warm, inviting atmosphere that made me feel instantly at home.

A Seamless Welcome: My Effortless Check-In Experience

The Hotel Britomart Lobby
When I arrived at The Hotel Britomart in Auckland, I was immediately struck by how calm and effortlessly stylish the lobby felt. It wasn’t the typical hotel reception scene — no large counter or chaotic crowds. Instead, I walked into what felt like a beautifully curated boutique space, with natural light, clean lines, and a warm, welcoming vibe.

The check-in process itself was refreshingly simple. I was greeted right away by friendly staff dressed in relaxed, modern uniforms — linen separates and Allbirds sneakers — which somehow made the whole interaction feel more personal and less formal, in the best way. There was no long queue or paperwork shuffle; the stand-up check-in terminals made everything quick and easy.

The Hotel Britomart Check-in
What I really appreciated was the flexibility — they offer 24-hour check-in, which is such a relief when your travel schedule doesn’t line up perfectly with typical hotel times. I didn’t feel rushed or like just another guest passing through. Instead, it felt like I was being welcomed into a place that cared about the details — from the soft lighting and floral touches in the lobby to the genuinely warm staff.

It’s clear that sustainability is a big part of their identity too, and even during check-in, that eco-conscious design and ethic came through without being overbearing.

Overall, my check-in experience at The Hotel Britomart was one of the smoothest and most thoughtfully designed I’ve had — easy, efficient, and a perfect first impression of a hotel that truly values both style and substance.

A Serene Sanctuary of Style and Comfort

Bed in my guest room
Staying in my room at The Hotel Britomart was a real highlight of my trip. From the moment I stepped inside, I felt like I’d found a peaceful sanctuary away from the city buzz. The space was beautifully designed with clean lines, warm timber accents, and a soothing palette of natural tones that instantly put me at ease. Thoughtfully furnished, it struck the perfect balance between simplicity and style, with soft lighting enhancing the calming atmosphere that welcomed me after long days of sightseeing.

The room was generously spacious, allowing me to unpack and settle in without feeling confined — ideal for a multi-night stay. Blackout curtains and individually controlled climate systems ensured uninterrupted, restful sleep each night, which I truly appreciated after busy days of networking and exploring the city.

A Bathroom Designed for Comfort and Calm

Shower in my guest room
My bathroom at The Hotel Britomart was just as impressive as the rest of the room—modern, spacious, and impeccably clean. The walk-in shower featured a powerful rain showerhead that made every rinse feel refreshing and luxurious. The vanity area was sleek and practical, with plenty of counter space and a large mirror that made getting ready a breeze.

I appreciated the thoughtfully chosen amenities, which included high-quality, eco-friendly products that felt indulgent yet aligned with the hotel’s sustainable ethos. Soft, plush towels were generously provided, perfect for wrapping up in after a long soak or shower. And the bathrobes? Utterly cozy and inviting, they added an extra layer of comfort that made lounging in the room feel like a true treat.

Morning Light, Local Art

Sunrise from my guest room
One of the highlights was the view. The windows, varying in size, framed a stunning view of Auckland’s harbour—a daily reminder of the city’s lively spirit.Watching the early morning light stretch across the water as I sipped coffee in bed was a quiet luxury that made each morning feel special.

One of the subtle but beautiful details I noticed in the room was the presence of locally crafted artwork and pottery. The ceramics — from the mugs I used for my morning coffee to decorative pieces on the shelves — were handcrafted by New Zealand artisans, each with a unique, earthy texture that added character and warmth to the space. These small touches made the room feel not just well-designed, but deeply rooted in place. It was a lovely way for the hotel to celebrate local craftsmanship and connect guests to Aotearoa’s creative spirit.

Small but meaningful eco-friendly touches stood out: organic cotton bed linens, plush towels, and refillable bathroom amenities that not only looked elegant but supported the hotel’s sustainable ethos. The keyless entry system made coming and going effortless, and the built-in desk provided a handy space for reviewing notes or planning the day ahead.

Small Luxuries, Big Impact

Charity Tea in my guest room
One of my favorite touches was the little capsule coffee machine, perfect for a quick caffeine fix whenever I wanted. But what really stood out was the selection of Charity Teas provided in the room. Knowing these teas were ethically sourced and help support children in New Zealand and overseas made my tea breaks feel even more special — a simple but meaningful way the hotel connected me to New Zealand’s community values.

Control panel in my guest room
In my guest room, one of the standout features was the sleek electronic control panel. Discreetly built into the wall, it offered an intuitive way to manage everything — lighting, air conditioning, and the blinds — all from one touch-sensitive interface.

With just a few taps, I could adjust the room’s ambiance to suit any mood. The lighting presets were especially convenient, whether I wanted soft, relaxing tones in the evening or brighter light to read or work. The blinds operated smoothly with the press of a button, and the climate control let me fine-tune the temperature exactly how I liked — no fiddly switches or noisy units.

It was one of those subtle, smart design touches that made the room feel effortlessly modern and thoughtfully equipped — a perfect match for the hotel’s overall sense of quiet luxury and innovation.

A Delicious Start to the Day at Kingi Restaurant

Kingi Restaurant
During my stay at The Hotel Britomart in Auckland I had the pleasure of enjoying their breakfast offerings. Its culinary offerings, particularly the banana pancakes, added to the overall exceptional experience.

The banana pancakes were a delightful start to my mornings. Served with fresh raspberries, crushed hazelnuts, and a generous drizzle of maple syrup, they provided a perfect balance of sweetness and texture. Each bite was a testament to the hotel's commitment to quality and attention to detail.

I paired my breakfast with a perfectly made cappuccino — rich, smooth, and just the right amount of froth. Sipping it in the light-filled Kingi restaurant was the ideal way to ease into the day, whether I was preparing for a busy schedule or simply soaking in the relaxed atmosphere.

Dining and Gathering in Style at The Hotel Britomart

The Libraries
The Hotel Britomart offers more than just a luxurious place to stay — it’s also a hub for exceptional dining and thoughtfully designed meeting spaces, all seamlessly woven into the character of the Britomart precinct.

At the heart of the hotel’s culinary offering is kingi, short for "kingfish", an acclaimed restaurant that celebrates New Zealand’s land and sea with a strong focus on sustainably sourced ingredients. kingi is open from early morning through to dinner, offering everything from artisanal breakfasts to fresh seafood dinners paired with local wines. The menu shifts with the seasons, spotlighting small producers and fishermen who share the hotel’s commitment to ethical sourcing. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, with exposed brick, handcrafted furniture, and warm timber finishes creating a welcoming space for both casual meals and special occasions.

The Libraries
For private dining and events, the hotel’s Libraries — a series of intimate, book-lined spaces on the first floor — offer a unique alternative to conventional meeting rooms. Each room is beautifully styled, featuring curated art, designer lighting, and bespoke furnishings. They’re ideal for board meetings, small workshops, private dinners, or executive retreats, and can be configured to suit different needs.

Guests looking for larger function venues can also access several beautifully restored heritage spaces within the Britomart precinct, managed by the same visionary team behind the hotel. These include the Seafarers Building and The Pavilion, offering expansive, light-filled spaces perfect for everything from corporate gatherings to wedding receptions — all just steps away from the hotel itself.

Together, these venues reflect The Hotel Britomart’s ethos: high-quality design, local connection, and a dedication to meaningful experiences, whether you're dining, meeting, or celebrating.

A Thoughtfully Revitalised Neighbourhood Beyond the Hotel

Britomart
What sets The Hotel Britomart apart is not just its stunning architecture or sustainable ethos, but the wider vision behind its surroundings. The hotel is part of a carefully curated precinct owned and managed by Cooper and Company, the team responsible for revitalising the entire Britomart neighbourhood. This stewardship goes far beyond hospitality — it involves preserving historic buildings, supporting local retailers and restaurateurs, and maintaining vibrant public spaces that reflect both Auckland’s heritage and its future. Their thoughtful, long-term approach has transformed Britomart into one of the city’s most dynamic districts, where every restored brick and planted tree speaks to a deeper commitment to community, culture, and environmental care.

Maunga Mural – Britomart, Auckland

Maunga mural
Nearby The Britomart Hotel is the The Maunga mural. This mural by renowned Māori artist Shane Cotton towers five storeys high in Britomart, Auckland. Painted on the side of Excelsior House, this striking public artwork features 25 stylized pot forms, each symbolizing a different maunga (mountain) from across Aotearoa.

The pots reference 19th-century painted meeting houses and reflect Māori cultural identity and history. Created in 2020 with assistance from other artists, the mural was commissioned by the Britomart Arts Foundation.

Blending tradition and contemporary design, Maunga is a bold celebration of ancestry, place, and connection in the heart of the city.

The Perfect Base to Explore Auckland

Sunrise from my guest room
With its unbeatable location just minutes from Auckland’s ferry terminal, train station, and key attractions like the Viaduct Harbour and Queen Street, The Hotel Britomart made navigating the city effortless. Whether I was catching a ferry to Waiheke Island for a quick getaway or exploring local galleries and shops, it was reassuring to return to such an elegant and peaceful base each day.

Even on rainy afternoons, the hotel’s polished interiors, cosy reading lounge, and carefully curated art installations made staying in just as appealing as heading out. The attentive staff were always ready with personalised recommendations, which made my visit even more memorable.

A Stay That Balances Beauty, Purpose, and Place

The Hotel Britomart
My time at The Hotel Britomart was more than just a hotel stay — it was a complete experience that reflected the very best of what Auckland has to offer. From the beautifully crafted interiors and sustainable philosophy to the seamless service and connection to local art, culture, and cuisine, every detail was considered and intentional.
