Culture at the Harbour: National Indigenous Art Fair Returns to Sydney

A Celebration of First Nations Art and Culture

On the weekend of 5–6 July, Sydney’s iconic Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay transforms into a vibrant cultural marketplace for the National Indigenous Art Fair. Overlooking the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, this annual event offers a unique opportunity to experience the richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creativity in one of the country’s most scenic settings.

Held during NAIDOC Week, the fair invites visitors to connect with First Nations artists, purchase ethically sourced artworks, and take part in cultural experiences that honour thousands of years of living tradition.

Meet the Artists, Support Communities

At the heart of the National Indigenous Art Fair is a powerful message of community and cultural exchange. The event brings together artists and makers from remote art centres across Australia, as well as urban-based Indigenous creatives, giving them a platform to showcase and sell their work directly to the public.

From handwoven baskets and traditional carvings to contemporary paintings, ceramics and fashion, every piece on display tells a story. By purchasing art at the fair, visitors are supporting remote communities and ensuring the continuation of vital cultural practices.

Experience Culture Through Music, Dance and Food

The art fair is more than a marketplace—it’s a celebration of Indigenous identity through music, performance and food. Live cultural performances across the weekend include traditional dance, didgeridoo, and storytelling sessions, offering a deeper understanding of the traditions that inform the artworks.

Bush food stalls and Indigenous-owned food trucks bring native ingredients to the table, offering dishes infused with flavours like lemon myrtle, wattleseed, and bush tomato. Workshops and demonstrations also give visitors a chance to learn about weaving, painting, and other cultural practices in an interactive way.

A Weekend by the Water with Purpose

Set against the backdrop of Sydney Harbour, the event is easily accessible and family-friendly. Entry is by donation, with proceeds supporting the ongoing work of First Hand Solutions, the Indigenous social enterprise that organises the fair.

Whether you're an art collector, a curious traveller, or someone looking to learn more about Australia’s First Nations cultures, the National Indigenous Art Fair offers a meaningful and memorable experience by the water.
