Performance of aloeswoood procession in a music program in Nha Trang City |
Aloeswood, known for its deep spiritual and medicinal significance, holds a special place in the cultural fabric of Khanh Hoa. The upcoming festival aims to not only celebrate this legacy but also support efforts to recognize it as national intangible cultural heritage. The event, proposed by the Khanh Hoa Aloeswood Association, will offer a platform to present both the tangible products and the intangible values that define the traditional industry.
Taking place from June 3 to 9, the aloeswood festival will span several iconic cultural landmarks, including the National Monument of Am Chua, the Special National Monument of Ponagar Temple, and the Provincial Museum in Nha Trang City.
Tradition Comes Alive Through Ceremony and Craft
A series of culturally rich activities will bring the history and rituals of aloeswood to life. Highlights include incense and aloeswood offerings, processions, flower lantern releases, and performances by over 1,000 participants including 10 unicorn, lion, and dragon dance teams. Visitors will also have the chance to witness demonstrations of aloeswood processing and browse exhibitions of locally made aloeswood products.
The festival is designed to connect history with the present, combining ritual with education and entertainment. Through these experiences, it seeks to introduce the spiritual, artistic, and community values that have long accompanied aloeswood in Vietnamese culture.
A Cultural Investment in the Future
Beyond celebration, the festival serves a deeper purpose: fostering respect for cultural heritage and raising awareness among younger generations. Emphasizing values such as respect for teachers, filial piety, and kindness, the event aligns closely with Vietnam’s cultural teachings and traditions.
By highlighting the story of aloeswood and its artisans, Khanh Hoa also takes a bold step in preserving a living craft and empowering the communities that continue to sustain it. As the province works toward official recognition of "Folk Knowledge - Khanh Hoa Traditional Aloeswood Industry" as national intangible cultural heritage, the 2025 festival could mark a historic milestone in that journey.
