With the support of the Development Partners Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business, Hanns Seidel Foundation and Myanmar Responsible Tourism Institute, the important discussion points were summarized in order to analyze them. This White Paper is the outcome of the analysis, and the conclusions drawn were used to offer recommendations concerning the tourism industry in Myanmar both during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This White Paper offers ideas on how to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on Myanmar’s tourism sector and provide seven recommendations for how to recover with confidence, through safety and security, and rethink and redesign a more resilient, balanced, responsible, and sustainable tourism sector” said Dr. Nicole Häusler, co-author of the White Paper.
1. Put Safety First
2. Promote Domestic Tourism
3. Adopt a Phased Approach for Reopening to International Travel
4. Improve Destination Management and Market Segmentation
5. Revise the Current Approach to Marketing and Promotion
6. Build a Supportive Business Environment
7. Invest in Human Resources—Managing Talent During and After COVID-19
“Now, and in the future, tourists will be seeking less crowded destinations. This is a chance for Myanmar to attract such visitors” said Mr. Win Min, Senior Programme Associate at Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business. In June, Forbes’ article mentioned of Myanmar as “Rising Stars in Travels: Potential To Become Major Tourist Destinations In A Post-Covid World”
This White Paper is intended to provide input for the Ministry of Hotels & Tourism’s emerging outline for the Myanmar Tourism Master Roadmap 2021–2025 which has been carefully crafted for the responsible and sustainable recovery and development of Myanmar Tourism during and post COVID periods.
“Tourism industry is facing an unprecedented challenge from Coronavirus pandemic. However we have to be resilient and we have to be prepared and hope for post-virus bounce. We do hope this White Paper will provide guideline and principle for a more resilient, balanced, responsible, and sustainable recovery for tourism sector” said Ms. May Myat Mon Win, Myanmar Tourism Marketing Chairperson.
