ACMECS Ministers Agree to Promote Digitalization for Tourism Development

ACMECS tourism ministers
In a move to enhance the resilience and competitiveness of tourism across Southeast Asia, the tourism ministers of the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) have agreed to prioritize digitalization as a key strategy for tourism development. This decision was made during the sixth ACMECS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting, held in Yangon, Myanmar, and chaired by Darany Phommavongsa, Laos’ Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism.

A New Vision for Sustainable and Competitive Tourism

At the meeting, the ACMECS tourism ministers emphasized the role of digitalization in enhancing the tourism industry’s resilience, sustainability, and overall quality. As tourism faces increasing challenges from global disruptions and changing traveler preferences, digital tools and solutions are seen as essential for ensuring the sector remains competitive in the global marketplace.

Minister Phommavongsa explained that digital technologies—from online booking platforms and virtual tours to data-driven travel solutions—could transform the region’s tourism offerings. "The promotion of digitalization will not only enhance the quality of services and experiences for tourists but will also make the sector more adaptable and resilient," she said at the press conference following the meeting.

Closer Collaboration for Stronger Tourism

The ministers also underscored the importance of closer collaboration among ASEAN member states to bolster the sustainability of the region's tourism sector. The tourism ministers agreed that by fostering partnerships across different sectors—such as hospitality, transportation, and digital technology—they could better address the challenges posed by shifting travel trends and the growing demand for sustainable travel options.

The ministers also noted that digital solutions can enhance the visitor experience, such as through contactless payments, digital signage for better navigation, and personalized travel recommendations based on big data analytics.

A Forward-Looking Plan: ACMECS Tourism Cooperation 2025-2026

During the meeting, the Plan of Action on ACMECS Tourism Cooperation was extended for the years 2025-2026. This plan outlines a roadmap for continued collaboration between the ACMECS countries—Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam—in developing tourism policies and initiatives that will boost economic growth and foster cross-border cooperation.

By extending the plan, the ACMECS countries aim to streamline their efforts to improve tourism infrastructure, enhance digital connectivity, and create joint initiatives that will attract international travelers to the region.

Promoting Joint Events and Festivals

The meeting also encouraged the creation and promotion of joint tourism events and festivals across the ACMECS region. Collaborative events like regional festivals, cross-border tourism campaigns, and joint marketing initiatives could help boost the region’s visibility on the global stage and attract more visitors. These efforts will not only enhance the tourism experience but also help promote the diverse cultures and rich heritage of the member countries.

Tourism Growth in ACMECS Countries

ACMECS countries have experienced significant growth in tourism in recent years. According to the latest data, the region attracted approximately 47.3 million international travelers from January to September of this year. This growth reflects the increasing popularity of Southeast Asia as a travel destination, with countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia continuing to draw millions of tourists from around the world.

The success of the region’s tourism sector will depend on the ability of these countries to adapt to changing trends, such as the rise of digital travel platforms, and to ensure that tourism development aligns with sustainable practices that protect the region’s cultural and natural heritage.

Conclusion: A Bright Future for Digitalized, Sustainable Tourism

With the decision to prioritize digitalization, the ACMECS countries are taking an important step toward ensuring that the tourism sector remains competitive, resilient, and sustainable in the years to come. By embracing technology and working together on joint initiatives, the region can attract more visitors, improve the quality of services, and protect its cultural and natural treasures for future generations.

As the world continues to recover from the impacts of the pandemic, the collaboration among the ACMECS countries will be crucial in positioning Southeast Asia as a top destination for travelers seeking unique, sustainable, and digital-first tourism experiences.
